This is great news! Hopefully there will be a version that simply works on the phone alone that is optomized for screen size.

It looks somehow like Ubuntu for Windows 10, somehow bolted on to the the Android OS below or somehow appified.
Would really love a galaxy with Sailfish or the Librem OS, so we have to wait how much integration they actually offer.

According to the article at pro-linux.de [1] it's some sort of non-Android Linux running on the Android kernel.

So it's basically a chroot, just like Easy Debian. And eventually it will suffer the same fate:
Once there are no more upgrades of the Android kernel for the device it will just be a matter of time until the chroot system can't be upgraded anymore.

On the other hand, Jolla's libhybris has show that it is indeed possible to run a full blown GNU/Linux distro above an Android kernel without a chroot.

So I'm kind of expecting a "Sailfish DeX" to be announced by Jolla anythime soon :-D

I do not have a problem with that. Everything comes to an end at some point, you cannot expect old devices being supported forever.

While I agree in principle, there is the problem, that you need to find a new good device before you can retire your old one.

The N900 is my phone for 7 years now and I would have loved to replace it with something more modern for at least half of that time.
But I just couldn't find an alternative. Android, Apple and MS are out of the question, because I don't trust them. Besides, even if I trusted them, there were few devices that I actually liked from a HW POV.

Although I still use my N900 it's always been some love-hate thing, mainly because I'm frustrated with the limitations that are a consequence of Maemo's proprietary core. The N900 has tought me not to settle with something that is "semi open" again.
This is why I didn't get a Jolla and it's also why I hope the Librem 5 will become true, even at the cost of a hardware keyboard, which I would not even have considered two years ago. I guess I'm just growing desperate.

I consider myself a bit less ideological and more pragmatic. I use my N900 as my daily and I also feel its limitations, but to me they are not in the proprietary bits but in the hardware. No amount of openness can get over the fact that the device is 8 years old now and not quite up to the task for certain jobs.

8-9 years being my normal hardware upgrade cycle, with my "new" kit being usually 1-2 years old, this thread seems like the right place to start looking
