Hello
I have seen a few references here to people who are using
Midnight Commander for N800
I searched the maeomo.org and it says
http://www.opbyte.it/maemo/

I downloaded the Deb from there and tried to install it using the applications manager "install from a file" Then I get an error "software not for this version of OS" .

What is the secret to installing Midnight Commander on N800
many thanks
stephen

I don't fully understand how they are using it. I added the repositories for it, but don't have an f10 key so I couldn't quit out. Someone suggested trying esc+esc+# and see if that works.. but how do you do a 10 in that case?

Just set your zoom level one notch lower to 80% and F10 will magically turn up. The ESC-ESC-thingie doesn't work reliably.

Anyone who wants to install midnight commander on the N800, use the package you find here:

http://www.komputika.net/maemo/

That one works on ITOS2007.

You can klick on the F10 item. This is midnight commander with "mouse" support, so you can use your stylus. But all that shortkeys doesn't work for me. Btw. where's the ESC "button" ?

@drjazz1947 :

I don't know why you can't install it. I just added the repository, changed them all to "mistral", updated and it worked...

This is very cool. MC is an excellent copy of the ancient Norton Commander. I first discovered it around the time I was using Redhat 5.1, and have continued to use it on all of my Linux servers and workstations up through the current Fedora Core 6.
FYI, when I have an improperly key-mapped SSH session, I use <esc>0 in place of <F10> if it doesn't work. The same goes for <esc>5 for <F5>, etc. Everyone who plays with the internals of Linux should check out MC and look through the Commands menu to see how many nitty gritty functions can be done more simply. With MC, Pico / Nano, and BASH, you can do all the admin you need.

Hello Karel et All
I downloaded the deb from http://www.komputika.net/maemo/
suggested by Karel and installed it from the apps mgr "from a file" and IT Works fine on the N800.

The MC app I gotten from the Maemo list--> http://www.opbyte.it/maemo/
does NOT work.

Also Karel's trick of using the Minus _ Button to reduce magification to 80% does inded bring the F10 Key so you can exit. Yes this MC does work with stylus , so thats great!

Also got PINE email client installed so Now I can log into to my ISP and delete SPAM email before using sylpheed or another POP email client to retrieve the good email.

thanks a for your help
