Why would they do that? There's no way around the fact that N900 is mobile touch screen device and the UI needs to be modified to reflect that. Fennec is that modified version of Firefox.
Wasn't there already some news of Fennec having at least beta version ready soon, so a final version before end of year doesn't sound such a stretch.

The goal is to ship beta releases of Fennec on the Maemo platform and Windows Mobile 6 in late 2008, and release in 2009.
"Fennec" is the code name of the effort to build a mobile version of Firefox.
