Hello.
Since maemo 5 already makes huge noise all over the internets, it's logical to concern that more users will enter the community. Let's use this situation to actually improve the community.

I was thinking bout some centralized place for all community designers to meet, collaborate, receive help requests from coders, get ranked, showcase their work and give away (sell?) their small design stuff like themes, sound packs or icons or receive donations.

I know, garage can be kind of used for this, but it's functionality is rather poor for these purposes.

So, anyone interested in such a thing, that will definitely raise the overall maemo software level or screw this?

Thanks.

I like this idea.

Especially for Maemo themes.

No, you've missed the point.
design.maemo.org would not be about fremantle/harmattan/you name it UI improvements - there's a Brainstorm for that, you're absolutely correct.

It's the center for all things related to visual appearance of maemo apps. If coder needs some UI work in his project - he simply goes there, look for proper designer (UI/icon/whatever) and asks him for help.

Well, something like this.

For the time being current designers can find each other on other platform such as Twitter or deviantArt. It starts with tagging well agreeing on protocols and such. If there is then enough material and interest a project like this can take off more 'naturally'.

Consensus on #maemo seemed to be:
  • Setting up lots of infrastructure before there's content/desire is a bad idea, generally.
  • "Design" sub-forum on tmo, moderated by wazd & timsamoff
  • Stickies in that forum for best themes (pointing to maemo.org/downloads/), tools, tutorials etc.
  • Can use forum features for polls, showcasing, blogging, whatnot.
  • We could set up http://design.maemo.org/ as a redirect to that sub-forum, giving the "brand" aspects of the idea.

Yeah, a design sub-forum sounds like a good starting place.
