Once there are no more upgrades of the Android kernel for the device it will just be a matter of time until the chroot system can't be upgraded anymore.

I do not have a problem with that. Everything comes to an end at some point, you cannot expect old devices being supported forever.

Although I still use my N900 it's always been some love-hate thing, mainly because I'm frustrated with the limitations that are a consequence of Maemo's proprietary core.
