I am amazed that in Amazon there is still new N810 for sale, but should I buy new N810 ten years after release?

What I can do with N810, but not with N900?

The N810 has a larger screen and can run ASUI.

I used mine everyday to read web pages until it broke yesterday.

What is ASUI?

to OP: I would buy an N810 because I like how it is built. I would prefer N900 for all other reasons.

With all due respect - I don't see why it should sway one in any direction (N900 vs. N810). It's definitely a must-have after one has already decided on an N810.

I suggest not only an n810 but an n800 as well...
the very different benefits of both become apparent once one truly mucks about and understands their unique abilities.
for example...
the n810 with its back lit keyboard...is handy for many os's , de's , wm's and apps that need that physik keyboard.
the n800 with it's 2 sd card slots and it's front facing speakers...is perfect as a media beast...music, film, audiobook....etc..

that is just a small example of a couple of their best attributes and uses applied to them. ...that are more practically and immediately applicable ...
there are others...
(But I will keep my post as brief as possible here and not consume a page...or pages ...as is my wont...)

As far as true daily drivers go...
If one were talking about a well built, and supported device with cel capabilities...
I have absolutely no comment to provide on that.
it would be pages long if I did...and there already is a thread on that topic.

If however one is talking about a truly flexible device..a computer...a tablet...that runs not just "a'" operating system...but can run many...
with so much to offer ...
still...
and so much to explore ...
still....
and so much yet to be created on....
still....
with a chassis that is great...
screen real estate which is great...
and so much more....
still....
10 years on...

then look no further....

as far as stability goes in o.s., ap, build and body...
well...countless things have and do go wrong all the time for n900 owners ..
the n8x0's were put together pretty darn good...
from bottom ..up....
I have never had one have actual problems for me...
and I have had and do still have quite a few n8x0's ...


I suggest finding one cheap on ebay...
or elsewhere...
buying retail is not a choice I would make when you can pick one up at more reasonable prices than amazon...
you could spend that excess saving on extra batteries...
or a solio solar charger...
or countless other accessories for your new toy.

What's not being said in this thread so far would be how the N810 would require the user to know how to set up custom repositories since the Nokia ones are dead. Also, a lot of software has not been updated or fixed in ages - but many are still useful.

The N810 has no GSM radios in it whereas the N900 does. So calls from the N810 are going to have to be via Wi-Fi via SIP.

However, out of all of the Maemo releases, the N810 was my favorite. But after so many years, I'd find my actual uses to be limited - streaming music, perhaps streaming some video, as an alarm clock and to let me know what the weather may be. Some eBook reading and some very, very, very, very casual web browsing.

If you're adventurous and have some specific use cases; I'd say go for it.

Well it isn't like the nokia repos for the n8x0's had a great deal in them in the first place...
rarely do I ever need anything from them...
and ...of course I would not think...nor dare dream of violating Nokia's copyright laws by having a back up of those few nokia bits anyway...

but yet again it is only in case of nuclear war...
haven't really needed to use them either...
other than some 3rd party repos which need to be either brought under the n8x0 official repos...or saved in their entirety to wayback
for access, research purposes and download...the main repos are perfectly fine...

and yes of course some apps have not been maintained...
But that can be remedied in most cases where the problem is just that.. ...by people taking the time to maintain them...
The bulk of the maemo4 apps work fine still..

I putter and use many of them all the time...

and yup ..it is slow compared to 16gb ram octocores nowadays...
and yup ...consequently due to browsers not investing time in older hardware...it is slow compared to modern devices with modern browsers...

as far as no gsm...
yup ..it isn't a "phone"
and for all the greatness of the n900 (and the n900 is truly the best linux phone past present and for a little while to come...yet....)
there are plenty enough issues which have come about for endusers with the gsm end of things...
Just look at the number of issues...there are plenty of threads....
right down to the infamous "No telephony...." thread.

In the end...the durability of the devices..and the fact that 10 years on..it is STILL a device and platform with use and life...
says volumes...

I like a lot how N810 sound, there is no phone/tablet around with these stereo capabilities and compactness.

I decided to buy second hand N810. Now it is on my hand, I have to say it's not stupid buy new N810. Ofcourse it's not for everybody, but its classic like Harley Davidson on motorcycles and you want custom it by yourself.

And I impressed that Meamo 4.1 on N810 is so different than Maemo 5 on N900. It's like step from Maemo 6 (Meego on N950) to Meamo 5 on N900. I think I am only guy who has seen Maemo versions in "wrong" order and I have to say if Nokia release somekind new Classic Maemo tablet/phone it should have OS chooser by user taste.
