Sadly, no-one seems to know anything about the proximity sensor.

Yep , sensor works very well , but it also reacts to light , this bothers me .

Have you test the sensor with above testing script under strong sunlight?

The delay is probably in the software to prevent momentary movements while it's in e.g. your bag or pocket from unlocking the phone.
