Here it is a modded hildon-desktop that make your app menu looks like the n9's!
Give it a try and tell me what you think

For installing use these commands on terminal:

root
cd /home/user/MyDocs
dpkg -i hildon-desktop_2.2.153~1_armel.deb
killall hildon-desktop
P.S: For seeing the full name of the icons you have to change the font! If you will find a nice font just let us know, so we can use it as well! (if somebody has n9's font for n900 maybe could upload it here!)

yep ! I was also asking about menu mods like the good old symbians there was gridpacher by coderus if i remember correctly

Haha yeah these old good days
Coderus had also added if I am right some swipe to symbian too!
But then he bought a n9 and he didn't do anything else about symbian(I wouldn't as well if I was him...).

So if it was possible on symbian, I think that it is on maemo as well!

Is there any way to do this by editing the hd-launcher-grid from the source code of the hildon desktop?
Here is the file from the source code I am talking about.

Better use cssu version. Check 118 line in hd-launcher-grid.c and 82,83 in hd-launcher-tile.h

This is a nice find
But this is just about the columns on portrait and on landscape, there should be something similar for the rows right?

I've changed what I said and this give effect (some icon's name disappeared).

How did you made it working for the n900?
Do I have to do what the INSTALL file says?
I have the source on my linux virtual desktop, but I don't really know how to make it a deb or something working for the n900
