I'd love to resurrect my N900.

Is there anyone out there able to customize, upgrade software successfully to function on mac operation system, iCloud and other apple features? I am based in Southern California.

How would it work in 2022?

Any great qwerty phones in the works if not?

Thanks!

Here member nonsuch has made the best guide to resurrect N900 with the old Maemo Fremantle system:

https://dt.iki.fi/nokia-n900-resurrect

Follow these instructions if you need to get N900 to work atleast somehow right now.

If you are not in hurry wait and I believe in the end of year 2022 new Maemo Leste system may be ready for daily use.

https://maemo-leste.github.io/

I believe N900 may not be enough for your needs.

There is F(x)tec Pro1 X:

https://www.fxtec.com/pro1x

But if you are used to Apple level support this is not for you 'cause it seems it may be difficult to get any support easily.

The is also Astro Glide 5G which is coming out this year:

https://store.planetcom.co.uk/produc...41399314055362

And there is Pinephone which you can get keyboard case:

https://pine64.com/product-category/...e-accessories/

And there are of course many pages of other keyboard phones which may not be suitable for you with their low specs and old tech:

Since the N900 was based on Linux it is pretty easy for the community to work with what we have. The downside is we haven never had open source hardware driver support from Nokia or the upstream manufacturers, this is why we only can do, and have done, so much in the kernel to backport new security and tech into said old kernel.
Nokia has long abandoned this 'burning platform' and actually sold it's rights to build phones to MSFT for something like 5 years, though they are now making android phones. Everything here is all community now.
If you want a new phone where the community is building the OS, including a project building a new version of the Maemo OS found on the N900(some of the best software for mobile but it can't make phone calls yet) there is the Pinephone(most available OS options are still super alpha as in dev-only grade for OS & software) they just made a keyboard clamshell cover available last week. There ARE FOSS drivers for all Pinephone hardware so it will have a vastly longer life as a frontline device, though I have been using a N900 as my primary for about 10 years but am now testing Pinephone and am a dev for add-on hardware.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
Do you want macOS to run on a N900?

TBF the old webos Linux Palm phones could sync itunes back in the day, apparently they spoofed the phone type and it was controversial to lie despite everything being plaintext.
I found a link
https://daringfireball.net/2009/06/w...es_integration
we got some cool Maemo5 games out of the shared GPU.

Thanks!
I've been using the Unihertz Titan these days for my qwerty phone. I still don't like touching the screen for typing.

I wrote about it some in my phlog (gopher log):

lol, I had to install additional software (phetch) to be able to read this.

I understand you use Android in the best possible way, but it's still Android, you still have to fight it - and apart from everything else, it also comes with an expiration date.

My interest in "alternative" smartphones was always more on the OS side of things. Having full control over it, use the same workflow as on my computer etc.
Have the software be on my side.
But yeah, I loved both the N900's form factor and its keyboard when I used it.

Otherwise, nice rugged phone you got there.

Some smart and committed people are working on Maemo Leste, an update of Maemo to a mainline kernel with a Devuan Linux base.

This is a very ambitious project but there has been steady progress and a usable beta may not be that far away.

If they succeed this would mean that the full realm of Linux software for ARM becomes available for the n900 and that we have current security updates again.
