i'd like to disable the smileys as well, if anyone has a suggestion

for < and >, you have to open the additional soft keyboard on the screen by pressing the blue arrow, then Ctrl ("sym").

The smiles picture are located here /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon (and maybe different sizes else where) you could try re-naming/moving/deleting them and see what happens.

I think a health and safety notice needs to appear on that post - Overlord - as you have a lovely history of creating new posts to ask questions for the same things!

If you are unsure how to use terminal and what effects it may have on your device, i recommend not being the first to try it in case you damage your n900.

Ok, tried deleting them, you are just left with a missing picture box - same as browser would show.
Therefore edit smiles and insert correct punctuation; of course colour of text would be dependant on current theme - pain.
Shame the code goes to the trouble to display a missing image box instead of just ignoring it and leave the punctuation instead.

Is the smiley replacement hardcoded in rtcom-messaging-ui?

/usr/bin/rtcom-messaging-ui.launch contains strings like ":-)", ";-)" and '<img src="%s" alt="%s" class="MessagingWidgetsSmiley"/>', and there is nothing in the gconf schemas file that indicates an option to turn it off.

gah... would be so nice to get rid of smilies... whose bright idea was it to force this crap in without an option to disable it.
