I am sure there is a how-to on maemo, but can't find it at the moment. But you might want to give this thread a look:

If you don't want to use both OS, 2006 and 2007, in parallel, as described in link above you can also do following steps. I did the same and it worked fine. Now I have only OS2007 on my Nokia770.

1. Download Software Update Wizard from Nokia Homepage
2. Save your settings with "System -> Control -> Save"
3. Download newest OS2007HE on http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/os2007_hacker_edition.php
4. Start Software Update Wizard and install this image file
5. Reload your saved settings

It's actually easy, if you're willing to lose everything you may already have on your 770. If you want to save stuff, make a dual-boot, etc, it gets trickier. So the following is easy but will be a completely fresh start. No linux knowledge needed.

1. From your Windows PC, go to http://tabletsdev.maemo.org/os2007_hacker_edition.php

2. Enter the Product ID/WLAN number from your 770 as described, download the file SU-18_2007HACKER_4.2007.36-2_PR_F5_MR0_ARM.bin Never mind the other files listed.

3. Also download and install Nokia's update wizard at http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/...ate_Wizard.exe

4. Now turn off your 770. Connect the USB cable to your PC and 770.

5. Run the update wizard you installed in 3., follow instructions. Note, the "home key" is the silver hardware key with a little house on it.

6. Voila, you should have the OS2007HE installed.

And if I installed OS2007 on my 770 could I just as easily go back to 2006?

The way I or Buffi described, you wipe out any previous OS. So yes you can install OS2006 again as you did OS2007, but you'll have to also install again the apps you want.

More complex setups involve dual- or multiple-booting to have two or more OSs on the tablet simultaneously, you select the one you want at boot time. Or you can save an image of your current OS to a PC or an MMC card, then install a new OS and if you want to go back you can reinstall the image of the old OS. Search in these forums for clues.
