I'm a newbie 770 owner finding his way around the system. I have considerable experience with Ubuntu, so it's fun seeing how like Debian it all is (or isn't). I've got a handful of questions. I'm running 3.2006.49-2.

1) When working in vi in xterm, navigating around the text is difficult because the virtual keyboard doesn't have any cursor keys. I know I can use the main keyboard, but I'm not used to this. Also, the dash is on the symbol layout, as is the tilde, and it's a pain to keep switching. Is there a more xterm-friendly virtual keyboard replacement? And what about Ctrl or Alt?

2) I installed bash and thought to change /etc/passwd so that "user" would use bash automatically. Ah. Mistake. Firmware reset followed. Is there a way to cause bash to be the default shell or do I have to keep calling it from ash?

3) Not xterm related, but the wifi connection seems to want to disconnect all the time, and it's a pain waiting for it to reconnect. Is there a way to force it to stay connected for as long as the 770 is operating?

4) Is there an up-to-date list of repositories any good 770 user should have? I've found a few old lists but they contain dead links.

5) Is there a good site that explains the relevance of the distro codenames (bora, mistral etc)? Again, I've found a few brief explanations but I'm not sure they're up to date. For example, there's talk of a new version of OS2006 in the works. Is this true?

6) Is there a way to make File Manager see the root file system, rather than just the user-friendly Documents view?

7) Is there a way of genuinely rebooting the 770 from the GUI? I know I can use reboot or shutdown from root, but when I choose Switch Off from the menu, it only seems to soft reboot.

8) Talking of shutdown/reboot, how are runlevels implemented in the 770? I note that when I reboot from the terminal, I see an error message about the reboot being unable to determine the runlevel.

9) I tried installing the dropbear package but, although it installed, when I typed ssh at the prompt I got command not found. Is there a good SSH server/client package?

10) I might get a bluetooth keyboard. I understand that I have to install a special bluetooth driver. Will this mess around with my existing bluetooth connection to my Nokia GPS unit? Will it make it compatible with all bluetooth keyboards?

Phew! Think that's it. Any help appreciated

Hah! I can answer a couple of these.

3) Tools->Control Panel->Connectivity
Then set the time you want to stay connected during Idle times.

9) I use putty on Windows (http://www.openssh.com/windows.html) and openssh (http://maemo.org/community/wiki/installssh2006/) on the 770.

The ability to send ctrl+character should be one of the menu items.

Create a symlink to /

Beware the metacrawler though (assuming the 770 has this (mis-)feature).

If you have the power unplugged it will shutdown properly.

openssh - you need to enable the "red pill mode" then install from the maemo repo.

Look at http://www.math.ucla.edu/~jimc/nokia770/scrawl.html (disclaimer: haven't personally done that)
