Books
Is there a bit of software that could sit on my pc so that when I dump a .lit file etc into a directory it automatically converts it into html format - and preferably downloads it to the n800.

I find all these book formats a bit confusing and the html seems easiest to read anyway. It would be good if it created a clickable index as well.

Videos
On a similar note is there anything to do the same with avi, mp4 files (I like the videos on www.ted.com) so I can store and watch them easily on the n800.

Internet radio etc
I love the radio 4 listen again web site - can I listen to these on the n800 - the normal player doesn't play them.

Can I listen to my tunes held on my PC but through the n800 - it would be nice listening to stuff in the bath.

As for the TED videos, try using VIDEO CONVERTER which you can find by searching these fora. I've already converted around half of them and I keep them on an SD card. They look quite nice on my IT.

You can stream media to your IT from your PC using a UPnP server. SimpleCenter and TVersity are the two that I use. SC won't convert video to a format that the N800 IT understands but it does audio well. You can have it automatically download and save podcasts and vodcasts for playback whenever you like. TVersity will automatically transcode video to an IT compatible format but requires that you install and configure on your PC third party codecs. I haven't been able to get the transcoding to work always. Perhaps it's a codec config problem. If anyone else reading this has been successfull in getting video transcoding to work reliably, please post how you did it.

Good luck!

ABC Amber LIT Converter has a command line converter tool which you can invoke manually; for automated conversions, perhaps someone can wrap it up in a bash or perl script? More tools

To convert video files manually, you can use Nokia N770 Multimedia Converter. 770-encode.pl script can be wrapped in a script to do automated conversions. More info

You can try playing radio directly from the browser, N800 will play it if the format of the media stream is supported. (I think it is not). Someone else has to help you out on this.

You can install one of the many UPnP media servers available which can stream the entire music collection from your PC to Nokia N800.
PC: Windows Media Player 11 or TVersity or Twonky or More servers
N800: Default Media Player or Media Streamer or Canola(go to 'Shared Audio').

Your N800 should have no problems playing BBC Listen Again programmes direct from the BBC website, I do it all the time. Just click on the Listen Again section of the BBC station you want, then find the program you want and click on the Listen Again logo next to it.

You can also add the live BBC streams to the N800's desktop internet radio player.

If you need help, I've done a detailed tutorial all about listening to BBC stations on the N800:
