Hey there!

Virtual round of beers (or whatever you drink is) for everybody. On Sunday I ordered an N800 from Play.com for £150.
I've been keeping my eye on the Tablets since day one and I've always found them very tempting, and when the N810 announcement was made I thought they had matured quite a lot.
Sadly the N810 takes away a few features from the N800 that I reasured, and I've already got a GPS. So when the N800 dropped in price, I decided to go for it. I'm now planning on ditching a long line of smartphones (9210, P800, 9300, XDA Exec, P990i) in favor of the dual-device setup. Hoping to get a K850i soon. The N800 should arrive after this month is over.

I've already ordered an 8GB SDHC card (hopefully it won't corrupt!) and a Martin Fields screen protector. I might get a BT keyboard and a case. We'll see.

I wanted to say thanks to everybody, especially Krisse for the tablet school.

I'm sure I'll come up with more questions, but right now the only one I can think of is; Can I send SMS messages with the N800 through my phone..? I used to do that with the Psion Revo and my 7110 over IR.

Thanks!

Regarding screen protectors, my N800 already had a screen protector on it when i took it out of the box.

That's interesting to know. However, I'm a bit skeptic; are you sure that's a protector meant to be used, or is it the typical protector for transport? (I.e a very thin plastic film you're supposed to tear off when using the device?).

Anyway, anyone know about the SMS (texting)? Can I send text messages from the N800, or is there an application I can install to do it?

Also, some of you mention using ssh and scp to transfer files? How about samba (smb)? Can I mount my server shares on the N800?

Thanks!

*Apparently* OS2008 will ship with Samba support.

That's good news

Texting seems to be a bit of a black hole though

The Joker,
Welcome! I'm new to this as well and the N800 and I have become inseparable. I am discovering free hotspots around town to use.

I wish I had read this before I got mine. Like Joker, I thought it was for shipping and that was why the tab was there. I assumed it should be removed. I tried to save it and re-apply it but it looked dirty so I removed it.

Belder, "inseparable" sounds good - at the moment I'm extremely fed up with my SonyEricsson P990i, it's slow and it's slow and it crashes, and it's slow and it's slow and it crashes and it needs reboots and so forth.. Did I mention it's slow...

... Can't wait for the 30th when the N800 is supposed to be in stock and then shipped...

Oh, and if the protector had a tab, it was probably meant to be pulled off... no?

If the N800/N810 support running an Apache server with PHP you will be able to send SMS messages. Google PHP+SMS .

Jeff, from a geek-point of view (and I'm a geek) that's very interesting. However, it's not really what I'm looking for.

On my Psion Revo (back in 2000) I was able to simply create a new SMS message in the Mail application, turn on IR on the Nokia 7110, and align the devices and send the text messages. Very trick!

I'd like to do something similar with the N800, but over Bluetooth.

We would need an application for that. Should certainly be possible. If someone could dig up specs I might even have a go at writing an application myself, or port/develop something already in existence.

My Palm T3 comes with such an application (that's why I know it's possible ), it uses bluetooth to send and receive SMS messages to/from my BT phone. Unfortunately it wasn't useful in the end, because the message would be cut short after the first non-US-ascii letter in the message (I'm in ISO-8859-1 land). And Palm's app. is closed and couldn't be fixed by anyone but Palm, and they didn't bother.. which was actually one of the reasons I sat up and took notice when the rumours started to build about Nokia's new Linux-based internet tablet.
