IIRC sudo gainroot should't require a password at all (since sudo, if configured to do so, will ask the password of the current user)

Sounds like installation of the becomeroot package hasn't worked successfully. The root account isn't locked by default, it's the same setup as on a 770 and the default root password is rootme. There is no user password which is why you shouldn't be prompted for a password when executing sudo gainroot as user - something hasn't gone to plan when you installed becomeroot.

Every time I install new firmware I find I have to re-think (and re-search) this problem, as my memory seems to have a residual block in this matter. Usually, after I install becomeroot (which I always seem to have a hard time finding) I then type "sudo su" when in xterm as user, and it takes me instantly to root. But this is not always the case!
. Installed Xterm, no problem. Install becomeroot, not a problem. Xterm>sudo gainroot, "password:", tried rootme, root, user, none of them work! Any suggestions?
