I can only enter data directly via my 770. After awhile, I am getting comfortable with the tablet, I would like to learn how other ways that may be easier.

I tried rdesktop/vnc. They do not accept data entrance via rdesktop/vnc. I do not know why. Another way is to bluetooth a copy into my laptop and do the data entrancce they copy back to the tablet. Any other ways, please?

I don't know the best way, but I find it handy to import data into MS excel on my mac and save the xls file. I copy this to the card over wire. I can view, edit and upload later.

(((I do this also for MS word files and have never understood why folks have difficulty using xls and doc files on their 770s. Abiword and gnumeric work for me.)))

Have you tried installing VNC server onto your tablet? The tablet will pop up on your PC screen and you should be able to use your PC's keyboard for input.

Otherwise if you want to waste $120, there's always BlueTooth keyboards.

Thanks for the quick posts.
Statwrangler: i think you are talking importing data. No. I mean enterring data. I use my tablet in a job environment and have to inventory, well, excuse me, these are live people, 3 to 4 times a day. I carried the tablet to do the job. I also have access to Wifi and desktops and laptops. Trying to find a better way than thumbing my entries 3 to 4 times a day.

Hedgecore: I AM doing rdesktop/VNC, the gnumeric does NOT take the keystrokes. You type on the remote desktop or VNC, it does NOT transmitted to the 770. And I do not want to plug an USB cable in/out of a laptop 3 to 4 times a day or 20X a week. I am afraid everything has a finite number of in/out.

edit: 770 is running X11VNC server and my laptop is running either tightVNC viewer or ultraVNC viewer. I can do small things with the viewer, but not data entry. Is there any setting I can make to make it take data entry to the gnumeric spreadsheet? kind of strange....

I use a bluetooth keyboard w/ gnumeric, but one of the "pains" is you have to select the formula bar (yes with you finger or stylus)before you start typing. It doesn't quite work like Excel, where you can arrow over to a cell and start typing. Unfortunately, my BT keyboard doesn't have a F2 key (like you'd using in Excel to edit a cell / formula) & I haven't found a non-touchscreen way to get into this mode. Try hitting F2 on the PC/VNC keyboard to edit a cell, but since I've never used gnumeric on a PC, I'm not sure if this will work.

Hi,

Not sure if this quite answers your questions, but it may help.

1)
When using an external data entry method such as a usb keyboard or x11vnc you need to switch the input method. The following command will let you use the keyboard as expected.
Code:
maemo-gtk-im-switch xim
And this will set it back to normal.
Code:
maemo-gtk-im-switch osso-input-method
2)
Synergy can be a good way to enter data into the tablet. I have my tablet connected to my pc (either usbnet or wireless) then set up synergy so I can just move the mouse off the bottom edge of my screen and on to the tablet (worth setting up just to see peoples jaws drop). You can then just use the pc keyboard and mouse and copy and paste between Excel and Gnumeric.
Here are some instructions for configuring synergy:

Good luck.

Thank you Johnpad, that is exactly what I want. However, I need some help in setup the Synergy. I tried for awhile and failed to set them up.

Not really until there's a n800 keyboard mapping software. You still have to click the cell to enter data which is time consuming.

bun: I will try to find time to update my synergy howto post that I linked to in my previous post. One thing I forgot to mention was that I needed to add the name of my pc to the /etc/hosts file on my 770 to get it working.
I also now have this working wirelessly from my OS X ibook which is very cool.
I just checked gnumeric and entering data and editing using F2 all works as expected. Maybe I'll try and create a wiki page on maemo.org.
