Is there a direct way to do a onetime export of contacts/appointments from outlook (using vcard? vcal? whatever the standard is)

realistically, that sounds like an awful lot of bother to go to.
Is it same to assume that once your data is in evolution, compatibility problems are essentially minimal?
Why do I talk about evolution? For backup purposes, I'd like a PC application that I could rely upon if my Nokia 770 were (for example) stolen? I'd entertain other backup methods (anyone?)

BTW, how is GPE information stored? Is it a SQL database?

How do I import appointments & Contacts from Outlook?
I see that there is GPE around. I also see that a syncing program exists
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/GpeSync
(BTW, has anyone used gpesync with Nokia 770 yet? Does it work ok?)
According to the GPESync, it syncs with evolution on linux. Ok, that's fine, my laptop runs evolution, so conceivably I could rely solely on that.
I'm guessing that the only way to get stuff into GPE is
Outlook to Evolution to GPEsync to GPE/Nokia770
Is there a direct way to do a onetime export of contacts/appointments from outlook (using vcard? vcal? whatever the standard is)
by googling, I notice that novell is working on an evolution client for windows.

Does using GPE preclude my using Outlook as a calendar
