Which has better speaker sound?

My main interest is listening to music and book files, and internet radio in a quiet room -- similar to listening to a clock radio at low volume.

How does the sound quality compare with a decent clock-radio (at low volume)?

Thanks in advance.

the sound of the n800 speakers are great in my opinion. i use it myself when lying down listening to audiobooks and in the bathroom when getting ready.

Don't know about the N810, but my N800 at low volume sounds exactly as my old clock radio at low volume.. incidentally, except for the screen the N800 looks pretty much like my old clock radio!

Thanks for the feedback.

There's a thread in the N800 forum in which a small number of users have reported "background hiss (white noise)" -- using high quality headphones -- and that a firmware update "did lessen it, but it's still there".

Does anyone hear this hiss form the speakers? Is the N810 better in this respect?

I don't hear hiss. Except that I managed to hear some hiss once when starting or stopping a sound source.. don't remember, it may not even be true. I don't hear hiss when listening to music, not through the external speakers and not through my AKG 240 headphones. Could be my hearing though..

I donīt know about the N810, but the N800 speakers are in my opinion excellent; I had had a lot of mini subnotebooks (Picturebook, Fiva, Libretto,Fujitsu, Vaio U-1 and Kohjinsha) and none of them had a sweet and rich sound from such small speakers like the N800īs.

Only had the N810 a few hours, the speakers do seem a little richer compared to N800. Haven't had a chance to really test it out though.

Was a bit concerned when Nokia decided to move the speakers to the side, but in fact I was pleasantly surprised when I actually heard stereo at an arms length! The only way I've ever managed this with the N800 is to hold it an inch in front of my eyes! Not exactly practical...

Thanks for the feedback.

I decided on the N800 -- which just arrived today. The sound quality is fine, and no hiss so far. Would prefer a little more volume, but it's good enough.

TIP: keep checking the 'volume' in the application you are running and especially in the 'status bar' as many applications reset themselves to about 80% of maximum volume even when you recently upped it to 100%.
[e.g. the FM radio does this quite frequently]

[PS: when relaxing, for best stereo effect, I love to either put the n800 on the top of my chest just under my chin or if lying down on the beach in the nape of my neck - if you then additionally cup your hands around the n800 and your ears you will create quite an enhanced sound ]

I don't own a N800 but I have a N810. I was surprised with the sound quality. For this type of device I was shocked how good it sounds. In my opinion , it sounds better than my Vaio TX850 laptop speakers.

Like most small speakers tho, high volumes tend to produce the crackly distorted sound.
