Well, it's been less than a week, and I haven't seen this question posted yet, I think, so here goes.

One of the first things I tried to do when I got my N810 was to browse the file system on my N800 using bluetooth. Unfortunately, ity didn't work. I was able to pair the two devices (it call itself a pda!without a problem, and the N810 'sees' the N800 in the file structure (and vice versa), but when I try to browse the file system using the file manager I get an 'Unable to access the remote device' error message. Curiously, I am able to 'send' files using BT from one to the other.

My N800 is running an *ahem* 'early release' of the 08 firmware. I haven't re-flashed yet. Perhaps this is the problem?

I think it may have something to do with the Bluetooth profiles on both of the systems. The N810 uses OS2008, that supports the profiles (from the nokia site):

Bluetooth specification v.2.0 . +EDR (profiles supported: HID, FTP, DUN, GAP, SPP, HSP, SAP and OPP)
The one that you're likely concerned with is FTP. This profile (from wikipedia):

File Transfer Profile (FTP)

Provides access to the file system on another device. This includes support for getting folder listings, changing to different folders, getting files, putting files and deleting files. It uses OBEX as a transport and is based on GOEP.
The long and short of it is, when the N800 is upgraded to OS2008 (check the links section, I think you can do it NOW), you should have access to these profiles as well, and thus be able to wirelessly connect the devices.

I've never used a bluetooth device in my life, so this is all based on stuff I've read. Feel free to correct me!

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Thanks, Cap'n for your informative reply! I suspect that when I get things straight it should work. I'll do some testing later today and post my findings!

I don't have a N810, but I do have an N800 running the newly released, non-N810, beta OS2008. When I attempt to browse my N800 using my Mac at work, Mac OS reports, "Device does not have the necessary services."

EDIT: As a side note, it seems my Mac can now act as a headset for my N800.

Not exactly the same, but perhaps related...

1. I can transfer file from Treo 650 to N800 (OS 2007) via Bluetooth.

2. I can transfer file from N800 to N810 via Bluetooth.

3. I cannot transfer file from Treo 650 to N810 via Bluetooth.

The N800 and N810 both pair sucessfully with the Treo, recognize it as "Device Type: Phone", and show no "Supported profiles", but can use it to connect to the Internet via DUN.

I also cannot transfer file from Clie UX50 (older Sony Palm OS PDA) to N810. I have not tested the Clie with the N800. The N810 recognizes the Clie as a PDA with no Supported Profiles.

Later I will test with a Treo 680, which is newer than the 650 and UX50 to see if the age of the Palm OS Bluetooth implementations is the problem, and also with a Windows XP PC.

Update. I paired an N800 and N810 with a Tero 680, which is a current production device. Both tablets pair correctly with the Treo, recognize it as a Phone and show two Supported Profiles: DUN, OPP. However, the results are the same. I can transfer files from Treo 680 to N800, but cannot transfer from Treo 680 to N810.

Anyone else experiencing success or failure transferring files via Bluetooth to N810?

A quick update for this thread. Indeed, I haven't been trying to pair my device with a Treo but it sounds like the problems are related. For my part, I re-flashed my N800 to the latest 07 firmware and tried again. Again I was able to pair the devices, and was able to 'send' files (even multiple files, tho not folders) from one to the other, but I was still unable to browse the file structure of either one from the other.

"Unable to access remote device" is the message it loads. This is, btw, the same message I get when I try to pair with my phone and the razr doesn't connect till I restart it.

I thought I'd try upgrading my N800 to the OS08 to see if that work, (thanks Capt'n), but my first attempt at this failed. I downloaded what I thought was the correct file and connected to the wizard, but got a message telling me that this wasn't a valid file. Odd, but I only tried once. Likely I missed something or used the wrong installer...

Further testing. Sucessfully transferred file from Windows XP PC to N810 via Bluetooth without "pairing" the devices. I thought perhaps the problem was that the N810 knew the Treo was a "phone" and did not expect a file transfer. To test I deleted the Treo 650 from the N810 Bluetooth Trusted Devices list, and attempted to transfer, but failed.

Running OS2008, I can send files from my Sony Ericsson z520i to my n800 but not from the n800 to the z520i. I used to be able to running OS2007. I get the connection failed error. However, if I delete the devices from each and retry, it wants my phone to act as a remote for the n800 and connects fine as a remote (although I can't see why I would ever want to do that). Even if I keep the remote function on to maintain an active connection, I still get the connection error when trying to send a file. Any ideas?

Here's some clarification about functionality:

N800/N810 (same bt hw, same bt sw, running os2008) has:
- BT FTP client functionality for fetching/browsing files from remote devices.
- BT OPP client functionality for sending files ("Send Via Bluetooth") to other BT devices.
- BT OPP server functionality for receiving sent files (pops up an UI dialog) from other BT devices.

The device does not have a BT FTP server, so you cannot e.g browse the mmc file structure from File Manager of another paired tablet. Below UI layer "gnomevfs" OBEX plugin is used for transfers, so if you don't like File Manager you can do tests with "gnomevfs-copy" command line utility.

As for the possible interoperability issue (IOP) with Treo. Maemo Bugzilla is your friend, and provide hcidump logs so relevant people may be able to help.
