I am new to and know nothing about Linux. I like the N800 b/c it's affordable, small and does what I need. It's my first Linux device. I read posts here and don't have clue about alot of stuff. If you can, please give me the answers to the following questions:
1 - what is Xterm in N800? is it a progam provided in ITOS or I have to install? How to get to it?
2 - How do you recompile the kernel? do I need a computer with some kind of compiler to do it or I can do it on the N800.

You can get xterm here:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/O...term-advanced/

Click on the install green arrow.

I don't know anything about the kernel.

its a program that gives you a text command line in a window - like old DOS - that lets you look at file, run files, copy files, etc.

Look at the wiki here on installing files: do it through the application manager.

Forget about recompiling the kernel. You won't be doing that. You may be 'flashing' your tablet, which is easy.

It's Linux's DOSbox. You get it from the usual repositories, although I believe it will be part of the upcoming standard ITOS2008.

Don't. Not unless you first read up on things Linux.

You don't have to anyway; just about any extra options that might be useful for you, have been done already. Just ask around, or -- to prevent hazardous sarcasm -- use the search function.

Don't misunderstand me: Compiling a Linux kernel isn't that hard, but it is very easy to screw up a custom kernel like the Nokia's and needlessly brick your tablet. Reflashing is bad for the ozone layer, you know.

What? Didn't His Goreness say 't were so?

In any case, it has now been officially declared heresy to "elaborate", "explain" or even "annotate" all matters that declare us humans evil for "the Planet".
