Try the Wiki on this site: http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi...nner.27s_Guide

The section titled "Beginner's Guide" will probably be of the most help to you. (It's usually quicker to dig around for the info on here, or on www.maemo.org than it is to wait for a reply, some people will just ignore posts if the info is already out there.)

Good luck!

The first thing I would recommend (if you want a bit of a challenge) is to upgrade to the Hacker Edition of the OS2007 Operating system - you can find more info here: http://os2007on770.garage.maemo.org/ The hacker edition looks better and there is better application support, I have found that it basically lets me install OS2007 apps on my 770 device - OS2006 is good but its old and OS2007 just looks better plus the latest hacker edition comes with Microb which is a full gecko mozilla compliant browser which works better on most sites than the old opera browser! Next step is to open this site in your browser http://www.gronmayer.com/it/ and start setting up repositories - all you have to do is click on the links on this site and the application manager will do the rest. Next in the application manager you can click the button "Browse Installable applications" and this will now give you the full list of available applications. Have fun with this, the 770 has more limited space than the n800 so you will have to be a bit more selective on apps (the hacker edition also takes up more space than OS2006 but I think its worth it)

Also maemo.org and garage.maemo.org are great websites for announcements and application info. Check back with the garage often though as its updated frequently!

You can download files to a PC and then copy them to the 770 via USB and then try to install, but for some programs using a repository and aplication manager to install is a better idea because it automatically gets any extra files you need. I am still a new user though - can someone who is a long time user give their input please?

As long as you get the .deb files you should have no problem doing this but as nosam said the application manager takes care of auto updates to software which is a nice feature. If your laptop has a wireless card you could potentially share the internet connection and use your tablet online via that which would save connecting it via the usb cable...
