Hi All-

Over the past year or so I have been using a simple tool on Windows called Launchy. It is basically an app launcher, but also has some other functions as well (calculator, for instance). Information about it can be found at:
http://www.launchy.net
It has also been covered by Lifehacker.

I've been thinking about whether something like that would be useful on the N800/N810. I suppose it would be a lot more useful on the N810, since the way Launchy is currently invoked (on the PC) is by pressing Alt-Space on the keyboard.

Anyone else use Launchy? Would something like it have a use on the NIT, and would it make sense to implement it?

My purpose with this post is just to brainstorm about it. In the end, it might just not be a good idea for the tablet.

Since text entry is somewhat awkward (for me, anyway), it might be easier and take less time to find the menu item for the program you want. Alternatively, you could install something like simple launcher to launch applications from the home screen. I hope that helps.

Yeah, i agree that some kind of Gui / Iconized quickstarter on the homescreen would be the better way,
due to the limited typing input speed. (:

I just downloaded it for my PC, and it's very cool! I like how it guesses at what I'm trying to launch and gives me a set of options. That feature could be useful for a tablet.

I agree with the previous poster that it would be useful to have home screen launch applet, but the iTablet and Simple Launch projects are already working on something like that.

The advantage to Launchy is that you can pull it up at any time, which I believe is similar to the application menu on the Tablet (which can be launched by a special physical button).

If you were to create a version for the tablet, perhaps the best thing to do would be to see if you could intercept the signal that pulls up the application menu and run Launchy instead. The interface for Launchy could be extended to include a finger-friendly link to the application menu. That way, the users get the best of both worlds: they can use the text-based Launchy search if they want, or they can just cut straight to the application menu.

Thanks All for offering your feedback on this idea. I can see how a text-based launcher wouldn't be suitable for the N800. I will check out Simple Launcher.

I've enjoyed experimenting with my new N800 (got it in early Dec but it was under quarantine until I was finished with exams last Thursday!)
