I have my first N800 and have VNC Viewer working on it - that is, I can control my servers via the N800. What I cannot (yet) do is use the N800 to log on to the server IP & port address and run VNC through a browser web page. (port 5800). I assume this is a Java app issue; I get to the page but do not see the VNC authentication box. Javascript IS enabled in the browser.
Can anyone tell me if there is a solution to this? Thank you.

Javascript is not java.
Browser based VNC requires java.

And there is no Java (yet) on the tablets... at least nothing that I know of. So you're out of luck.

There are a couple of things going on here. Yes, as confusing as it sounds, javascript has nothing to do with java. You need Java to work on your browser to view normal VNC screen when connecting to port 5800.

Unfortuntately the vncserver for the N800 is a stripped down version and does not support port 5800 (it doesn't even listen on that port, meaning you can't connect). Therefore the java VNC client will not work because it is not supported on the n800 version of x11vnc.

That doesn't mean that someone somewhere couldn't port a VNC server which would support the java vnc client, but that it isn't supported today.

I hope this helps,

Craig...

I understand fully that javascript is not the same as java.

When you say "couldn't port a VNC server which would support the java vnc client", are you refering to a port or a program modification? What port does the N800 VNC server operate on (guess I could watch it). I have admin control over our servers.

Really, the port "5900" concept is more to my desire, as it would allow for file transfer with UltraVNC.

Otherwise, whats a good simple ftp program for the N800 (maybe that also had SSH options)?

Thank you

Sorry the choice of "port" was a little ambigous. I meant the process of compiling source code to different targets (or computers). You would need to modify the program, and recompile to have x11vnc support the java client.

The x11vnc does support a "normal" vncclient which usually connects to tcp port 5900. That sounds like what you want to use.

As for file transfers, I use scp (with openssh installed on my n800). Once you have open ssh, you can use Konqueror and the fish:// protocol for a GUI, or if you have windows you can use WinSCP. Or, as I stated, I just use a command line 'scp'.

I hope that helps,

Craig...

I'm confused. In the first post, I was pretty sure HWL was asking to connect from the N800 to remotely control another computer... but wanted to do it using the Java client version that loads from port 5800. That won't work because there is no Java support on the N800.

cvmiller is talking about x11vnc, which is the server program that you run on the N800 to connect from another computer to remotely control the N800... the opposite direction that HWL was asking about.

In any case, there are lots of other threads on this if you search for either VNCviewer or X11vnc. I'm sure you'll find just about everything has been covered, including file transfer using VNC.

My bad. You are right. I mis-read the thread.

No problem, I'm sure the discussion will be useful to someone else anyway.
