Everything beyond basic I try with my N800 seems to difficult, if not impossible

I'm trying to play MP3's from a server. Currently I'm using a UPNP server. I'm not finding any method to 'add a file to the playback queue' unless I use the built in mediaplayer. How do I do this via the file manager or via microb upnp:// browser?

For UPnP, have you tried Media Streamer as it's a UPnP controller/player which does allow the user to queue tracks for playback, which are served by a UPnP Media Server such as Twonky or TVersity. In theory Media Streamer should already be available to install on your N800 via the application manager.

If not my suggestion is to take a look at http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php looking inside each package (Show Package) to find the one that contains media streamer [My N800 hint: http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ ].

When you find the package that contains Media Streamer, check to see if its an existing repository already included on your N800 before you add it (again)using the click to install option. (Read warning on gronmayer page if you are having problems with your repos)

Then is should be a simple matter of installing the app and giving it a try

I'm running 2008 Beta on my N800 currently. I do not believe mediastreamer is available for 2008. I was hoping there is some way to add some context menu item for 'Queue' instead of just 'Play' which would work for any/all media players. But I'm not sure how.

ps. Currently I'm using Mediatomb for the UPNP side. Seems pretty good so far as a server. The N800 however is another story.

OK did not appreciate you were using the beta OS2008, I found that the UPnP support provided in the standard Media player in the new beta OS was very unstable, reporting a bug in bugzilla (Bug 2509 https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2509 )

We have to hope that Media Streamer is provided/supported in the official release of OS2008 and/or that Canola2 Beta provides these types of UPnP features during it's 2008 development roadmap.

Or perhaps another application will pick up the mantle in the area of UPnP media streaming, control and playback.

I installed the mediastream to OS2008 final last night. I cannot get it to work with upnp at all! While I can see the files and even add them to the playlist, the 'now playing' window just sits on 'Unknown'. It is as if it does not know how to play a streamed file. Did this work before?

Which UPnP Server are you using?

I am surprised that Media Streamer finds the served files and even queues them but is unable to play them, perhaps it is some type a firewall port blocking issue?

I'm using Mediatomb. I also have a Mythtv server which also provides UPNP which has the same problem.

Both Mediatomb and Mythtv work via the built in Media Player, but not mediastreamer. I also had problems with UPNP and kagu and some other application that I forget the name of. I'm starting to wonder if UPNP is only handle properly by the close source Media Player.
mplayer doesnt work with UPNP either it seems. Perhaps all those other apps use mplayer as their underlying engine?
