Okay, I was drooling through the whole day of work, rushed home and fought to get a download of the update. In an effort to soothe hubby's concerns about corrupted files, etc. I chose to forgo the collection of mirrors and other methods of download to get my software right from maemo.

I had the same problems getting in and staying in that everyone else did. One of the times of re-entering the page where we input the WLAN code, my pc popped up a download window. In that window it showed a now completed form of the bin file and is downloading a php file as I type.

I used the downloaded bin file ot update my system, but it did not work. Now my tablet is stuck on the Nokia screen with the usb symbol in the upper right hand corner.

1. How do I get out of this screen on my tablet?
2. what is the secondary file I am currently downlading?
3. How badly did I mess up my system.

Thank you for helping. I tried searching the forums, but do not really know enough to figure out what I need to find. I am trying to learn what I am doing, but this all pretty new to me.

Q1. I had something like this happen to me and had to remove and re-insert the battery to clear down the problem.

It happened several times and I was starting to think that I had bricked the device, but once I had a clean .bin file (from bit torrent) with the correct md5 then I was able to re-flash with OS2008.

Q2. I don't know.

Q3. Not much. I think it is pretty hard to really brick the device.

thanks dont I got my screen back and am now waiting for the file to finish downlading. It seems to be the same size as the update, so maybe it is just titled differently for some reason?

It might just be a temporary copy kept by your download manager in case the download fails and needs re-starting without having to redo the whole file.

If so, then it should disappear once you have a good copy.

Kathy make sure that the file you download is around 134 MB and make sure it completely downloads before trying to run the flasher wizard. It should NOT be called something different for any reason. Using the official maemo download site should work. I used the torrent from the official thread.

Kathy, reading your posts, is this your problem?

You downloaded the bin file via torrent method, but then when using the Nokia Update Manager you did not hit "I think it's a cancel option" at a certain point in process to allow you to specify the path to the bin file you downloaded and have locally on your PC.

As a consequence you are sat waiting in the Nokia Update Manager whilst it downloads the whole bin file via the currently slow Nokia Link.

I believe you can, ungracefully cancel out of the activity in one way or another, because until the bin file is successfully downloaded it will not start to update your N800.

Apologies for not being exact on the option wording in the update manager but I am not at home so cannot start the windows application to check.

This might help?

Kathy, I just want to compliment you on being one of the most rational noobs that's ever graced this forum. You do a nice job providing problem details, as is evidenced by the quick support you've gotten.

Glad to have you join the crowd! Enjoy your tablet.

OK, reading yet again...(Not thinking straight, this morning)

You need a fresh download of the bin file, where it would be beneficial to first check that the MD5 sum of the downloaded file corresponds to what is expected for the specific bin file.

There are other posts in the forum that will explain how to do this, an extract from another thread suggests that the following MD5's are correct for the different OS 2008 bin files.

89e0661318f60420c691f4e1dd0c6ba3 for RX-34_2008SE_2.2007.50-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
25292105f0769680828ea2ccd36d6807 for RX-44_2008SE_2.2007.50-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

Kathy,

Sorry for your troubles. When you get through this I hope you'll like the upgraded software like I do.

I was watching the same thread you posted on when user xxM5xx on page 20 of this thread listed two links. One was to download the update Wizard and the other was to the "bin" file for the update. So, I downloaded that to my computer and ran the update Wizard again. When it asked me for the bin file I pointed to the file on my computer. The upgrade went without a hitch.

The "bin" file is no longer there but I found this site with a working link. One user said they did a Google search and found the file.

Thank you all for your support. Someone suggested in an earlier post that I may have downloaded the directory for the file rather than the fle. Having learned from all of you how to verify that I was getting the right file, I got the download within 5 minutes and was up amd running in 15 min.

Love the new look, but haven't gotten to play much yet.
