Hi,

I work for a county in my state whose Environmental Health department would like to use some sort of GPS unit/PC combination to track and mark locations of hazardous sites and other points of interest. As the program coordinator explained it to me, he would ideally like to be able to have a handheld GPS device which he could carry with him which would track where he was, how he got there, and that he could mark on in some way to let him know what is at that location. Then when he got back to his vehicle or office he could upload or otherwise transfer that information to his laptop and either edit it or save it for later viewing. I've googled a little bit but I wasn't really sure how to phrase my question, and I was thinking maybe a tablet would be right for his needs. Any ideas?

Mike

I haven't played with it, but one or the other of the two mapping packages on the tablets allows you to bookmark locations and enter new POIs (Points Of Interest). In theory you could offload those back in the office. I've just never used those features myself.

I'd get one of those ruggedized Garmin units with tracks support. Cheap, easier, more reliable. The rest of the features of a maemo device just wont be used.

That's exactly what the program coordinator will do to you if you have him get the N810 to use for the GPS!!

I work for the US Army, we field a system for the Army and one of it's purposes is exactly what you describe.

You do not want to release a new N810 user into the field to rely on it's GPS.

An alternative solution would be almost any PDA/GPS combo.

PM if you want more detail.
