hello everybody. is the n800 antenna known to be weak? from rigth beside the wrt54gl router wifiinfo says i only have 71% connection, and it is too slow to use more than 40 feet away. i have pcs and laptop farther away with better signal quality. still love the n800

i will try boosting router power in the settings

Odd, my maemo devices have the best wifi reception I've ever seen. They'll pick up at least a half-dozen more APs than any other device can see in any given situation.

My N800 WiFi reception is very sensative...more so than most anything I have owned. I am running my router (Linksys WRT54G) at 1 milliwatt (.001W) xmit power using DD-WRT, and my N800 has no problems communicating.

While my n800 wifi is good enough, my other adapters (an integrated ipw2200, a cheap atheros based pc card and an even more cheap rt73 based usb dongle) are much better (they have less problems in locking on a signal and give usually higher speeds).

As far as I'm aware, speed is actually a bus issue, not a reception issue.

My N800 has great wi-fi sensitivity.
As for speed, it's true that it depends on signal strength. The wi-fi driver negotiates a transfer rate which mostly depends on the signal quality (which is again related to signal strength). If you have 'Wifiinfo' installed you can monitor the current negotiated rate (from 54Mb/s and down all the way to e.g. 2Mb/s). Or use iwconfig from the command line.

Oh, I knew that, I was talking about real throughput. E.g. at the same distance from the access point, while I can see an mpeg2 stream (between 5 and 7 Mbps) with my laptop (with any of the adapters mentioned above), with the tablet I cannot even see a downconverted stream at around 1Mbps.
While that could be due to other factors (maybe the wifi adapter sucks too much cpu, maybe they keep the driver secret to try to conceal other defects), the fact that I can associate more easily with those adapters than with the tablet indicates that the much touted n800 wifi performance isn't that spectacular.
Either that or I have been particularly lucky choosing the cheapest adapters I could find that outperform the tablet.

I wouldn't be surprised, I've not been able to get fast transfers via wifi using any protocol/software, CPU always maxes out.

USB transfers are much faster.
