I ordered a new Verizon cellphone, and will be getting the tethering option (legitemately). I want the N800 to check my email while I am in the car. In the ideal world, I'd like the N800 to use WiFI when it is available in our buildings, and switch to the cell phone when WiFi is not present.

1. Probably too much to ask, but is there any way to automatically do the Wifi/DUN switching?

2. When I am on DUN, I want to check email every X number of minutes, connect via DUN, then hangup. If I don't hang up DUN, I won't be able to make or receive calls. I remember on PCs running Outlook, there is a check-box to hangup after a send/receive. Is there a way to do this on the N800? I am using ClawsMail, because it handles IMAP much better than the N800 contacts app, but I can use a different email app if one of them does the connect/hangup thing better.

3. Assuming #2, will the N800 know if I am already on a voice call, when the periodic email send/receive starts? I assume it will just fail to connect, and retry later?

I guess if I need to make a voice call, I need to start noticing if DUN is already in use! Will most phones ignore the voice call of DUN is in use, or will I screw up the DUN session by dialing a voice call?

???

I just got my N800 on the 27th and paired it up with my Sprint Blackberry 8830 using DUN. You can still get calls while its on a DUN connection except that if your N800 try's to access data it will not be able to do so until you end your call. AT&T is the only one I know that you can have a call and still access data at the same time. I haven't setup any email on my N800 because I mostly just got it for web browsing in the car or on the go. I wish the browser would be faster but I guess for its size its ok.

Verizon told me the DUN and voice calls are only one at a time. That said, if you call Verizon 3 times, you will get 3 different answers. Not sure if your ability to use DUN simultaneously is exclusive to your Blackberry device.

I looked at the Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices, and actually had the new Verizon WM6 device for a few days. I found that the concept of the phone and computer in the same device were mutually exclusive, which is why I went with the N800. Most of the time I just need a small phone in my pocket. For my needs, I'll mostly leave the N800 in the car.
