I hope there is someone that could tell me how to correct this. I have supplied as much information as I could find.

Let me tell what I have tried.

Test environment:
* Nokia 770 (3.2005.51-13)
* Router - Linksys WRT54GSV4

When I set the router to 802.11b only my connection works fine. When I switch the router to 802.11g only or 802.11b/g I can not get a connection from the 770.

At first I thought that it was the router (even though my laptop works with the router under all settings). I tried the same thing with a Netgear router and experienced the same problem when the router was set to g. I also tried connecting to other routers at various hot-spots, the connection only works with routers set to b only. Most places where I want to use the connection have their routers set to g or b/g so it is important for me to get this working.

I also tried to disable security on the router but it did not help.

This is what happens when I try to connect to a router that is set to b/g (mixed mode):

* The router is identified, the SID is shown and the signal is strong (I sat close to the router).
* I select the router and the W flashes for a few seconds and then shows it is connected.
* When I look at the IP assigned I see that it did not connect
(169.254.178.242 default router 0.0.0.0).

Here is the dmesg output when I try to connect to the router in mixed mode:
[ 601.337280] Loading 3825.arm firmware
[ 602.149200] CX3110x: MAC address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (I removed the detail)

[ 772.761566] hwa742: setting update mode to manual
[ 772.761596] hwa742_notifier_cb(): event = READY

Here is the dmesg output when I connect to the router in b mode only:

What firmware are you using on your router?

I had issues with my WRT54G v2, and had to use an "official" Linksys firmware over one of the third party firmwares (Satori, etc).

If you do a search for wrt54g or look for posts by me, you should see more details.

I have the std. Linksys firmware on my WRT54GS v4 which is v1.05.2.

I have tried DD-WRT but it did not help.

My security settings do not seem to make a difference. I believe that I have isolated it to 802.11g or 802.11b/g. The connection works ok when the AP is set to b only.

My experience with the Netgear router is that g and b/g works but is not very stable.

* Are there other users that are using a WRT54GS with my firmware version?

etienne, you may want to run a search of the forum messages. I recall there may have been someone else with the same router and the same problem.

I have a netgear router and it's set to b/g..works. If you've tried other g routers maybe you got a bad 770?

Odd ... I have a WRT54G and it worked on my first try.
Does it connect to other networks? Does your wireless network serve other wireless clients?

I think the difference is that my router is a WRT54GS and not a WRT54G. The other posts all talk about WRT54G.

The only other network that I got it connected to was T-Mobile which was a b only setup.

Your 770 associates and connects fine to the AP, but never gets an IP. Are you sure you're running a dhcp server on the AP ?
Also, what happens when you assign a static IP and gateway to your 770 ? Can you then fetch web pages ?

Oh yeah; you have to create a new connection profile in the 770 whenever you change your connection details (SSID, etc). I had a lot of problems until I figured that out.

I am getting this dmesg as well for local-ip problem, and can almost never connect to a wifi router. I've had a few isolated successes:

[ 648.414245] autoipd uses obsolete (PF_INET,SOCK_PACKET)

My situation:

- Router is a SpeedStream 6520 provided by my ISP (Bell Canada - a huge provider). I have to use it. According to the update link provided, the firmware in the router is up to date. I've tried daisy chaining an older Netgear off it but found the two routers did not play well together for unknown reasons.

- The SpeedStream is set to b/g and there is no way to alter it.

- I've tried setting static IP, gateway, and DNS addresses. It has not worked.

-I have a Linux laptop (SUSE 10.1 using Broadcom 4319) attaching with wifi to this router very reliably.... ....so the bug is in the Nokia, not the router.

- A side issue - it is maddening that the WEP key is starred out when you enter it. I've never seen this on any other device and it makes it very difficult to enter reliably.

Got my Nokia 770 as an evaluation for a possible larger project involving dozens of units. I was interested in the Nokia 770 as we are a Linux programming shop, rather than Windows. This would be a nice little unit graphically, but the wifi problems are a complete show stopper.
