Hi All

I've had my 810 for a week and its a blast. However, when attempting to extend the virtual memory to the internal store, it fails with an error saying virtual memory could not be created.

At first I thought it was a space issue, though I had more then 128mb free. Then I considered the possibility that it required contiguous free space on the card, so I moved 650 megs of map data to my removable card, but that didn't seem to help either.

The only other thing I did was rename the internal storage volume. I believe I did this in Windows with the tablet connected via USB.

Who else is experiencing this problem? Did you also rename the internal storage chip? Has anyone got a solution?

Also, if someone will tell me exactly what the default name of that internal storage is, I'll try renaming it back to the original label and see if that helps.

Thanks!

Frei

Okay can someone post for me the exact volume name of the internal 2GB storage?

Depends on what you want - mine is /media/mmc2 with du, but mount shows /dev/mmcb0klp1 on /media/mmc2

I have the same issue, maybe it already uses the internal 2GB as extra RAM and can only create extra space on an external card?

Im actually talking about what the volume label is, not the mount point, its the name that the 2GB internal storage appears as in the file manager.

Its the only thing that I have changed and I have this virtual memory problem...

Benz I don't know how much the system would like virtual storage on a removable volume... At least, I don't get the option to do it where is says "extend virtual memory".

No, it uses the non-removeable card. Mine is named "Internal" (without the quotation marks), and I believe that is the default name.

Be aware that several users have reported problems with the card becoming inaccessible when Virtual Memory is enabled. I cannot say that this feature causes the problems, but it does complicate fixing it because the OS shows the card is busy.

Well, guess what, I plugged it back into my PC and deleted the volume name I gave the internal storage, rebooted it, and presto I was able to create 128MB swap in say about 45 seconds. Once I deleted the name it reverted to Internal on the file explorer menu... Thats kind of an interesting find.

I guess the moral of the story is, those with VM problems should beware of the volume names they give the storage. I bet you could jam it up even worse by doing that renaming after you initially create the virtual memory.

Had my 810 for precisely two days before this happened. Don't presently have a micro USB cable, but will definitely try the foregoing. I guess the lesson learned for new users seems to be - if you turn on virtual memory, leave it on... and the rest of us can hope that Nokia patches this issue in the near future.

Oh, and for some reason GPodder won't update, it just gets stuck at a particular spot each time - 2/27 podcasts - the database is on internal ram, the media itself on the external chip. So I wonder if the N810 just has a penchant for scrambling the internal RAM?

Off topic, but: I would recommend booting from SD card. Its better in many ways, including a partition for virtual memory instead of a swap file. That's a weird workaround though!
