I am sure that I am daft, but I have poked around and used the search feature here with little useful info.

I setup up Skype. I have the latest OS firmware. I installed Skype. I even made a test call to a local number here, so I know it works. Am I supposed to be able to see in Skype that my built in camera works and that Skype knows there is one in the 810? Is it that I need to just connect through Skype to someone with a video camera as well for my Skype to kick the camera into action?

Also, Skype's site insinuates that I don't have to pay for anything. The Skype app on the 810 likes to make me think that I need to start prepaying for credits.

So, if I just do Skype to Skype and want to use the built in camera to use video in a Skype call, I don't have to pay (?) and can the 810 currently do this on the most recent firmware?

Currently Skype on the N810 does not support video calling. This is a Skype issue, and not Nokia's or Maemo's responsibility, since Skype is developed by, well, Skype.

You *can* use Gizmo Project with video for tablet-to-tablet and tablet-to-pc video calling. I've done both myself and it works great.

Skype on the tablet is indeed free for Skype-to-Skype calls. The extra fees are for if you want to be able to dial out to non-Skype contacts and such.

I was similarly confused when I couldn't find the video-chat option in Skype.

I switched to Gizmo also...it works great for calls and video-calls, plus it integrates your favorite PIM service, such as AIM.

If you're running the latest firmware (OS2008), there should be a Gizmo icon in the Internet folder in your web bookmarks (it might be somewhere else, too, I just know for a fact it's there). Follow that, and you should find a download button. Alternatively, you could also just open up Tableteer on your Tablet to get the download link.

Ok-- here's a thought I just had. I don't have an N810 (yet) but I know on my eee pc, you had to upgrade to the beta version of Skype for Linux in order to enable video calling. Could someone try and load the Skype for Linux beta on an N810 and see if this enables video calling on Skype?

hmmm...I'll play around with it. I'm somewhat of a Linux n00b, but I can do some research. I've been wanting to learn how to "port" Linux applications, so maybe this is a good time to learn

I have a good friend in Portland, OR who's a Linux wiz, who might be able to help...that is, of course, if he's not already sick of me calling him night and day with stupid Linux questions!

If I figure anything out, I'll let you guys know...

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but Skype is closed source (casting no judgements). Although video calling is available on the Linux "Beta", that hasn't been ported to the internet tablets yet.

I have no inside information but we probably won't get a version until they do a separate port for Maemo or until at least the linux version comes out of beta and they do a proper port.
