I bought the N810 and I like it a lot. I'm making a trip to Central America very soon and I have been hunting (no success) for an app that will install and work as Babelfish does over the net. Any ideas?

I'd consider Palm emulation, but don't know anything about that or if such an application exists in Palm applications at all.

TIA

There are two to three dictionaries programs out there that would work. There is Sdictionary and I think two more. I can't remember there names at the moment. Try searching, I'm sure you will find your answer. (also try maemo.com/downloads)

Thanks for the reply!

Perhaps I could have been more clear than to post for a "Conversational Translator" that works like Babelfish, By that I meant that a user could enter a complete sentence or even a paragraph and it would be translated.

In the case of a dictionary, words are done one at a time and that would be a difficult method to have a conversation.

That said, although I am a new N810 owner for less than a month, I do remember looking at SDict a couple of weeks ago. I would have installed it and kept looking for what I need, but as I recall it required Python. When I attempted to install that I got an error message that said my "hardware" (brand new N810) would not run it. Also as I recall the project has been suspended and another "clean sheet" replacement begun... but no code yet.

Best,

No, there are phrase dictionaries too that you can download.
Oh, and you do know that most languages translated in babelfish are incorrect, right? It translates (or tries) word for word, so you still have to decipher word order, among other various things, depending on what language you are translated too.

As for python, you should be able to find a .deb somewhere. Maybe try using the search function or even google?

Well thanks again!
I did download the files for SDict but not getting much further I didn't know that phrase translation was possible. As for Babelfish, yes, I did know about the limitations.... Especially after seeing the mangled Spanish to English results! However, after looking around I thought it the best available. I have a couple of paperback pocketbook dictionaries and I would check stuff that didn't look right. Everybody on both ends is understanding and good naturedly tolerant of the situation.

Just retrieved my N810 and the files are still on the card. SDict responds:
Application packages missing: python2.5, python2.5-hildon, python2.5-gtk2, python2.5-osso, python2.5-xml

Time to wash, rinse and repeat...

Cheers!
