It turns out M1000 supports 5HZ. I changed the rate with the MiniGPS utility, linked from this thread

Works great. I see a different position every 200ms.

Haven't tried maemo mapper @5HZ, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

What specific use do you have for sampling at that data rate? I could see how it would capture acceleration data and perhaps turns a bit quicker, but don't really see much use for the average user. I expect sampling at a higher rate increases battery draw, too.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. More accurate tracks may not assist in navigation, but they're certainly more useful after-the-fact. My friends and I go nocturnal canoeing about twice a month, and I have .kmls of all the trips saved in Google Earth.

Checked maemo mapper, and it works great. Very smooth motion at 5HZ.

You must go speed canoeing. I mean, how far can you get in a canoe in a second, really?

The big difference is when turning (heading). For example, Google earth seems animated in turning when I'm going around a cloverleaf in my car. If your map is constantly oriented north, it is probably less important, but if you are using a map facing "ahead", the difference is considerable.

And for telemetry. (at evdoinfo.com/3gstore.com I did the mod to add gpsd to a KR1 router and it includes the data stream from my motorcycle - having more points really helps there too).

BTW - does the GPS set the clock on the Nokia?

Most Globaltops do 5hz "out of the box" including the ultraslim and the HUD version - and are priced close to the Holux, and use the 51 channel chipset (which maybe isn't better than 32).

buygpsnow also carries holux and has a free shipping special on the m1200
