How can I put in some sort of ad blocker in the default browser?

Addblock plus. The CPU seems to take an extra hit with the plug-in.

Overwrite your /etc/hosts file with the one from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

NO! NO! NO!

Do not overwrite your hosts file!

Append the hosts file at the end of that link to the end of the file in /etc/hosts. Do not overwrite it.
