I have cross-compiled emacs for maemo.

I have used the GNU stable version 22.1 with no X (command line only).

It works very well, and you can further customize the environment with things like ispell, dict funtionality, mail, custom modes, etc.

Of course, an external keyboard is highly recommended.

I wondered if posting the emacs port online would be useful to the community.

If so, where? Is garage.maemo.org the place to host such things? It's a .deb file, I could eventually host it on my homepage, but my provider imposes a transfer limit of 100 Mb daily and 3 gb monthly that might be too stringent if demand is higher than expected, considering that the emacs package is a 30 Mb download.

- yes, i'd start a garage page so you don't have to worry about bandwidth limits...

- btw, i know pico/nano, etc. are favorite editors (with vi ubiquitous), but i also fondly remember microemacs as being a light, tight, and fast subset of the emacs keyboard control set... (it wasn't a fork, but IIRC, a separate effort)...

i did a quick and dirty port of qemacs too if anyone is interested. of course it's not as featured as full emacs but is v fast. port basically added some keymap hacks for n810 but i haven't worked out how to make it show up in the switcher yet so i have not released it... patch available.

I would love to have a look at your version of emacs. I'm using zile ATM which satisfies my basic needs, but 22, even with no X would make my handheld a lot more useful.

For ports like this, a garage project is almost certainly overkill (IMHO, anyway).

I'd suggest using the mud project (but then I would). You can then:

• Have your patch maintained in a Maemo-specific subversion.
• Get tools for maintaining the Maemo patch and building new upstream versions
• Auto-upload of versions to maemo Extras (in time)
