I'm a newbie using n810. I'm trying to use external devices with USB.
I'm using camera, memory stick and key board without cable modification nor external power.

But to my external hard drive, I can't read anything in my 2.5" external HDD. If I power to HDD directly via 5DC in, it works. Howerver, this cannot be portable.
So, can I use external HDD without external power? Just with the power from N810. Can I do it with cable modification??

are you really able to use usb keys with the standard usb cable provided with
the n810? I read on other threads we need to modify the cable and to run a
command line application in order to use them.
It would be great not to buy and modify another usb cable, is there anyone else
doing that?

The N810 doesn't send enough power out of it's USB port to run a hard drive. You either have to power the drive externally or be using a powered USB hub.

True it's not all that portable but that's just how it is.

Very likely the OP is doing like I am, N810-->standard provided cable-->USB A female to A female adapter---> usb key, then running scripts that are in the wiki.

The tablets can only provide 100mA of power to a peripheral. Most USB keys use this or less, as to smaller micro/mini/sd drives. My old (2ndGen) iPod works but it gets recharge power via the firewire port. The newer ones need a powered hub.

There are 2.5" drive enclosures that can run off battery power. I have a cheap one that came with a battery holder for 4 AAs. (It's OTG host compatible too, which is why I bought it a couple of years ago. Great for sucking photos from a card reader while on vacation.)

Yes, right. Like gemniii42 said, I'm using F2F usb gender so I can connect M to M.
So, anyway I need to drag power from external, either battery or outlet??

You need not merely external power, but if the device ASKS for too much power it won't work. Most things that charge via USB ask for a lot, so you need a powered hub.

Where do I find power specs of SD card USB readers?

i use an old archos mp3 player that uses a regular 2.5" laptop hd. it runs on its own battery power, so i put an 80g hd in it and it works great.
