So I'm finally getting around to writing my review of the N810 like I promised Dan (thoughtfix) I would after finally getting it and playing with it for a couple of weeks now. As a reminder, this is my first tablet.
Overall, I have to say I like it. A lot.
Is it my perfect device? Probably not quite, but it's darned close.
What I don't like:
- lack of good integrated PIM software. Not that I need this a lot, but I did install GPE-calendar and friends. I think the lack of a calendar is the worst flaw out of the box, but one easily remedied.
- inconsistent online docs. Most of what's out there is pretty scattered (forums, this wiki, maemo.org's wiki, etc) and outdated (lots of OS2007)
- included nav software. I think I played with map for all of 5 minutes before uninstalling it in disgust and installing the infinitely superior maemo-mapper.
- the LOUSY camera. Ugh.
- while I remember it, the flakiness of the nokia servers. It took me 3 days until I could successfully upgrade my OS as recommended.
Given these flaws, I do think it's a bit overpriced. My husband is tempted by the N800.
What I do like:
- the keyboard. Yes, it's a cheesy thumbpad, but it works forr me, and I don't find even the top row too crowded. I do have a bluetooth keyboard as well. The placement of the D-pad is sometimes annoying, but most of the time I hardly notice, as I never got used to it being on the face anyway.
- the GPS. Yeah, it's a bit slow to lock on at the moment, but not horribly, and it's already helped me get unlost in central Austin.
- software options in general. Yay!
- browsing, wifi, etc. All works great, which it SHOULD given the moniker 'internet tablet'.
- everything else I forgot to mention.
I've seriously lost track of the number of times and ways I've used the tablet, just grabbing it from my desk and going.
