Hello friends. I purchased my first Nokia N800 from Buy.com 3 days ago and will be receiving it in the next 3 days. I am searching for some information before it arrives on what the download speeds will be like when downloading shared files on my networked media HD.

I am using WWW File Share Pro software that will enable me to use the Nokia N800's browser to access my networked HD by typing in my IP address + port number. Opening music only takes a couple of seconds to open a song. Opening a 700-800 Meg AVI movie takes 6-7 minutes. IE opens these files on my wireless laptop at 1.5-1.6 Meg speeds.

Has anyone tried testing the speeds or knows of what the max speed is on the Nokia N800 on a 10 meg down/768 up cable internet?

What are the fastest speeds any of you have seen downloading on the Nokia N800?

Will the Nokia N800 download as fast as the speeds listed above that I was getting from IE on my laptop?
Any other information about this topic is appreciated. Thank you all for reading and responding.

Sorry about the large wall of text as you put it. My first thread and question I have ever posted on a forum period. Just wanted to tell everything I could about the situation. Never thought my first answer back would be from an English teacher. Thanks for your comment that did not answer any of my questions. Seems silly to post anything up if your not going to help anyone that is asking for it. You don't like the way I posted my first thread, keep it to yourself please. Thanks for being a jerk.

Since it is your first post to a forum ever, you would think you might be a little more receptive to suggestions on how to fit in and make your posts as legible as possible. It is quite obvious from my post (notice the "hehe", the "=)" ) that I was keeping the mood light.

The more legible and reader friendly you make your posts, the more likely you are to receive responses or helpful tidbits. It's the way of the internet.

To throw some small advice concerning your questions, I have the same router and similar cable internet connection you do. While my N800 is fairly fast for what it is, the speed it no where near my laptop download speeds. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1505 that dual boots Ubuntu gutsy gibbon and Vista.

If the tablet is capable of opening the mentioned files (I don't have the sharing system you do) I would expect it to be quite a bit slower, depending on memory cards installed and network speed. The music would be ok I think, but the movies might prove to be a handful for the tablet at full resolution. Maybe putting up movies with smaller encodings just for the tablet might work better (should be around 250 megs, or so) for smaller ones, and would look fine on the tablet screen.

There ya go barqer. Edited and cut down to the basics. Hope that is more reader friendly for everyone. Sorry I got upset for your opinion barqer, but I put some thought into my first post and thought everyone would appreciate getting all the info at once instead of having to ask me 20 questions. After reading it again today, I understand what you were saying. Hope I got it right this time.

Thanks for the info about your Nokia N800 speeds. I never thought about converting them down to a smaller resolution, resulting in smaller sized files. That will save time opening them up for sure. Hopefully the video wont lag after opening a movie.

I know this isn't what you asked for but it may help:
http://mediautils.garage.maemo.org/

Also media streamer & video center can be nice to have on the tablet.

Thank you qwerty12. Those tools will be very handy to use with my Nokia N800 when I receive it on Monday. I was wondering what the best tools would be to convert the movies with.

Do those tools already preset the resolution that is ideal for the Nokia N800 or are there tons of options you have to tweak with to get them just right? Is there any other options in these tools that would help in any other way that I should change or is this one of those 1 click wonder programs?

I actually do not use network streaming (I use an SD card with http://xoomer.alice.it/sepaolo/n800vc/ which gives me fairly good videos) but tablet-encode is meant for the N800 so presets should be fine and mediaserv does the right transcoding for the N800 on the fly.

Mediaserv is linux only though.

I think Media Streamer is just an frontend to the UPnP service in Maemo so it may not be needed and videocenter can integrate with mediaserv for videocasts.
Mediastreamer & videocenter can be installed from the device's application manager out of the box (and with an internet connection set up)
