It seems I'm having bad luck with the 770. I've fubared 2 of them now. One within the first 36 hours. One within a week.

The strange thing is that the common thing between boh 'deaths' is that I'd just installed Rhythmbox.

After installing it, Rhythmbox played just fine for local files, but I could never get it to see itunes machines on my local network. I had started mDNSResponder from xterm.

On both occasions, my 770 stopped working after the 1st time i did a shut-down restart of it. Not a standby, but a complete off then restart.

I haven't tried gaining root on either of my 770s and had installed just few apps. No new apps within a day or 2 of installing Rhythmbox this last time.

The symptom: it looks like the video driver is corrupted. the screen is striped vertically, making it unreadable.

I can still connect via USB. sound still works (i hear the shutdown/startup, which i can do via the buttons since i can't tap the screen). I've reflashed the firmware to no effect.

Anyone else seeing this? I've seen lots of positive mentions of Rhythmbox on the forums, so I know folks are using it. That's just the common thread I can discern between my 2 incidents.

And, yes - I had 2 separate 770s - a new one was cross-shipped to me when I returned the 1st.

I should mention that the folks I've spoken with about swapping my 770 out have been great. They were helpful and informative and got the exchange taken care of quickly. (I purchased originally through nokiausa.com)

The tech support folks have been friendly enough, but none have been able to give me a solution to my problem short of returning it.

Just making sure you covered all bases - you did try re-flashing them with the latest OS update? That usually fixes most brick impersonations on the 770.

Wasnt going to say anything, but it sounds like FUD to me. Link us to this thread that says 20% of Nokia 770's have a hardware flaw.

i think i see the 'grey bars' someone mentioned on thoes other threads, but the bars change when i do something that would change what is displayed on the screen. for instance, if i hit the power button, i see the bars change (if the screen was working, i'd see the lock/shutdown options). i'm letting the battery run down now to see if that fixes it.

the pics on this thread are similar to what i have:

Ahhhh, looks like there is an issue. Well, Nokia seems to be on top of it and will replace the unit no problem it seems.

i'm open to the idea that it's a hardware failure - other threads report that screen failures are more likely at startup - but HECK I'm unlucky. two identical failures! i love my 770 but worry about what'll happen when it dies outside of warranty.
