i have the choice to either get a nokia n800 or an unlocked iphone 8gb
the n800 will cost 185
the iphone will cost 250

if i get the nokia i will get the sprint sero plan with a krzr 80
if i get the iphone i will use it with atnt

so the n800 with phone is 255
the iphone with service is 250

please suggest which one i should get
im confused and need reasons on which one to get

First the iphone does not have 3g and it is confined to edge speeds. no idea about the krzr but you would be better of to have a 3g compatible phone.

Well the nokia can do almost every thing except for multi-touch and accelerometer, which i really dont think are that useful. Wheras the nokia can do much much more if you have the interest and passion to make it do them.

Of course if you like eyecandy and pretty much will stick to some video and audio the iphone will suit you more.

And also remember that the iphone cannot have more than 8gb with 1 gb almost taken up by the os. Where as the n800 can at this point go up to 64 gb in the future. ANd you can always buy a 15$ nokia battery and double the power.

well i would get the krzr from sprint for bluetooth dun and i have a lot of movies and videos but i also want some thing to stream videos and music through my network and i need some thing that will be futureproof

i mainly need a portable pocket solution for most computing needs

If you have a lot of movies then it is better to have the n800. The way memory card prices are falling 32 gb will be pretty cheap.

And coming to movies and videos. Mplayer can play almost many formats like divx, xvid, avi, flv etc. But right now mp4 files do not play well. But there is always nokia video converter.

Streaming can be done with mplayer although it depends on the bitrate of your streams. Higher bitrates dont work but lower bitrates do work.

Coming to Audio nothing can beat the n800. Thousands of internet radio stations for free, fm radio, and rhapsody. The iphone has none of them.

Coming to computing needs. The iphone is hardly any computer at any stretch of your imagination. Wheras the n800 can be a complete computer replacement with usb otg, web cam for video.

Some additional features are the stand which is a great innovation. It really helps for a wonderful viewing which is very much underestimated.

Now with the canola coming out the n800 which was lagging in media playback comes right up to iphone. SO there is really nothing the iphone can do the n800 cant do. But the inverse is nowhere near!!

You may think that sdk release for the iphone will solve this. But remember for every app you are paying money!!.
As far as i remember apple charged something lke 20$ to pair your touch with a gps reciever. That is really unbelievab le. This is a clear indication for things to come.

And bluetooth on the apple is so severely crippled. No a2dp and not even file transfer. How in the world is that the most innovative device?

Beats me. i dont know when will americans wake up to the reality of the mobile world which the eurpeans and the asians are far far ahead.

Great reply, sachin007! I can only underscore his comments because he stated the facts so well. My niece has an iPod Touch and we compared it and the N800 side by side. The "touch" had very nice moving icons and turning it sideways and see the screen go from picture to landscape was a hoot, I tell ya! She can do iTunes and some web and there are third party speakers and peripherals to use. It's a really cool unit.

But, I still prefer my N800 because the open source can continue to add more features and usability. Plus, these programs cost me nothing. It's more like a computer in my hand and not just a media player. I discover uses all the time. I have a Kodak digital camera and can use card reader on the N800 to get the pictures onto my computer without having to install the Kodak software. I watch videos, listen to tunes, return e-mail, web surf and more. I use my Rhapsody account now more than I ever did. And, the Shoutcast stations and internet radio streams are fun. I've saved a fortune using Skype to keep up with my UK friends.

To me, the only down side to the N800 is the screen is virtually useless in sunlight. That was solved in the "810." Plus, the browser won't let me hear streamed stations on Clear Channel stations.

Still, it's still the best $239 I've ever spent.

And remember that the n800's screen is 4.13" in comparision to iphone's 3 inch" and a
resolution of 800 x 480 which means the images are crispy and you do not need to zoom at all. I rarely zoom even for clicking links. Wheras the iphone's screen is far lesser in resolution and you need to keep on zooming all the time .... even to click the links in a page and of course there is no copy and paste!

The micro b browser in the n800 is a complete web browser. Not some flashless mini version. IN case you dont need flash you can always disable. WHat i am saying here is that there is a CHOICE!!

Then there is instant messaging which allows 24/7 access to your im buddies. It supports almost all popular IM's with google talk supporting voice also.

Then there is voip via skype. I have been using skype out and the quality is almost
equal to regular phone calls. And i even could do it via my mobile's internet connection. This feature will never come to the iphone. There is also video chat with gizmo which works okay. The iphone doesnt even have a video camera!!

And of course the external stereo speakers are great for listening to internet radio and youtube videos which you can store directly for offline viewing also with a new
application called my tube.

I just want more people to try out nokia and not be blinded by apple's advertisements.

Just wait until april first where nokia is supposed to announce the next Internet tablet with wimax. then ull have more options

The iphone will soon get CorePlayer, which is an excellent mediaplayer for Palm and WindowsMedia devices taht can play many popular formats with no need to transcode (divx, mp4, h.264, in avi, mkv, etc), not to mention it has native support to the itunes media library which has a huge userbase.

My Treo (650 and 680) can play video MUCH better with coreplayer than my n800 with mplayer even though the Treo has lower hardware spec. Higher res, higher bitrate files plays smoothly on the Treo while my n800 freezes and stutters. Judging by the even higher powered CPU and hw accelerated gfx of the iphone (and some early demos on youtube, search "coreplayer iphone") it seems the iphone is going to be an even better than Palm\WM devices for playing video files on the go.

I've had an n800 for around 7 months now, it's a nice device. Definitely the best mobile browser right now in the market.. and also one of the coolest Skype handset. But other than those two, the rest of the apps are clearly lacking (mediocre email app, rss reader) or non existent (office document viewer, decent PIM apps).

I brought my n800 around for the first couple of weeks, and decided that I don't use web apps that I can do without the extra bulk and complication. So I went back to using my Treo 680 (cellular capability, great messaging app, awesome PIM, offline wikipedia, great ebook app, pop-up dictionary, decent office doc reader, etc).

Based on that experience, I wouldn't recommend the n8x0 unless you're a linux geek or just looking to get a nifty new toy to tinker with.

I'm buying an iphone this weekend to try it out , so I don't know yet how the iphone really holds up against a Treo or n8x0 for my use.

Well, I don't think a 1g iPhone will be future-proof. It may not be obsoleted as frequently as the various iPods have been, but it will be soon enough. The N8x0 is sufficiently open (and Nokia plays a sufficiently low part in development) that loss of Nokia support for the N800 will not leave you with anywhere near the drop in utility.

Like you said, the answers here and on the iPhone forum will both be pretty seriously biased. But I think the iPhone is a good choice only if you want something fun to use that does basic phone, internet, and media playback. If you want anything more I'd go for the N800/phone combo. Understand that it is not polished; everything is a little rough around the edges. But it can do much more than even a jailbroken iPhone, and you don't have the hassle of trying to stay one step ahead of Apple when jailbreaking it, etc.
