It's normal for the d-pad to light up when you switch the tablet off.

I'm not sure what you mean by the second quesiton.

By the way, you shouldn't really switch your tablet off at all, it uses more battery life than leaving it switched on.

Edit /etc/mce/mce.ini; it has comments explaining the light patterns.

(Though it would be a little difficult making it only light up in the night; that would require changing things with a cron task...)

Italodance, there's no easy way to alter the way the N800's light behaves. Benson has suggested some advice, but you would need to be a very experienced user to do that.

The N810's light blinks when it is switched on, but the N800's light does not.

Yes. The booting up on the tablet (and on all computers) uses up a lot of power, so it's better to just leave it switched on all the time. You might find this tutorial helpful:

Yeah! You're right! Sorry about that, I got this totally wrong.

I'd totally forgotten that option existed, thanks for correcting me.

Does this solve your problem of having the light on at night? The blinking Dpad should help you find it in a dark room, if that's what you wanted.

Don't worry, the tablet is designed to be always on, Nokia built it just like their mobile phones. In fact the battery in the N800 is the same as the battery in their E61 smartphone.
