Well here goes:

I bought an n800 recently and have been enjoying it for about a day, looking at the different apps I could put on it and what not. Long story short, I slipped one of my 2 GB SD cards in the external memory slot, and I get the infamous "Card is corrupt or unformated" deal. I plug my tablet into my PC and format the SD card from there. Same message again. I then put in a 512 MB card with some pictures on it. I could view the pictures, but as soon as I plugged the tablet into the computer, my PC crashed. I rebooted, and looked at my n800, and again the Card is corrupt. I try to format it from the n800, which was another waste of time. Finaly I tried the stock 128 MB and tried to put music on it, only to be forced to restart my computer. Again. What am I doing wrong here?

Are you running the latest firmware?
Was this new or used?
Did you try the card in the internal slot to see if there is a difference between the two?


I have used a variety of cards in my n800 without issue.

Yes, I am using OS08.

The cards I am using have been used before in digital Cameras, but I formated them with FAT.

I am using a 2GB Impact, a 512 Lexar and the stock Nokia mini SD.

There was no difference between the internal and external slots, they both gave me identical messages.

The cards I use are fat32 formated. You may want to try that on the larger card.

I would try re-flashing the device with the latest firmware.

If the device was used, re-flashing may correct something left behind by the previous owner.

If new and re-flashing does not correct it, you may need to exchange for a different one.

When I try to load a file onto one of my cards (The cards are in my N800) I get an error saying : "Cannot copy or repalce (enter file name here): Data Error (cyclic redundancy check).

I have no idea what this error means, but my card was freshly formated in FAT 32. Does this have any indication towards anything?

A CRC error basically means there was a write error. The CRC is used to make sure the write happened correctly.

It is sounding to me like either the card has issues or the 800.

Assuming the card works fine in other devices it sounds like the 800 is the issue. I just can't say for sure since some smaller cards work fine in the 800. Having another larger card to try could tell a lot. I have used 2, 4, and 8 gig cards in my 800 without issue so I know in general the 800 can handle them.

Alright. I ran a few trial and error tests by putting my cards in a different SD card reader. When I put them in the reader (I was using a USB card reader) the files transfered easily between my PC and my SD card. However, when I put my SD cards in my n800, it could read the files, but it could not delete or move them.

An interesting note when I tried to move files from an SD card to my n800: The original file (on the SD card) would be gone, and would appear in the desired directory (on the n800). However, as soon as I removed the card, the file on the n800 would vanish. I would then plug the SD card back in, and the origional file would be gone too. The same thing happens when I moved files from my n800 to an SD card.

TO make a long story short, my n800 has the ability to read off SD cards, but not to copy or write on them (the SD cards are fine). To me this sounds like a hardware problem, however I am going to flash the device to make sure.

Well, I don't think things can get much worse. The device is only partially working, so I contacted Nokia for help. I bought the device on ebay with some unexpected side effects. Apparently, warrentees do no "transfer from person to person" (as the nokia rep put it), which is strange because I always thought that warrentees applied to the device, not people. I am rather disappointed with the ordeal, after all I do like my n800.

My ebay seller is doing his (or her, respectivly) to give me a hand, but there is only so much that they can do.

You 'may' have a corrupted virtual memory, just a guess. See whether you can uncheck the virtual memory. CTRL panel > memory and uncheck virtual memory. If they disallow for 'unchecking', you nailed the problem. Post back if question,
