Does anyone know how to launch the 'device mode' dialog where you could select 'offline mode', 'lock screen' and etc? I would like to be able to call up this dialog box without pressing the power on button. The reason is that I want to disconnect my wifi connection while I am not using it.(I guess by
taking it offline, I would also extend the battery life.) Anyway, the power on button is actually rather small and hard to get at(I understand the reasoning behind this design), so I am hoping to find a way to be able to launch the dialog box using the touch screen interface(or a script when I can put into a script/command launcher such as load-applet) instead.

I have a N800 with the lastest OS2008(and 16+4GB of sdhc).

Why not click the connectivity icon in the status bar and choose disconnect? Works for me. I have my settings set to "always ask" for connections, and bluetooth left on but hidden. Idle timeout on GPRS but not wlan. Battery life is not noticeably reduced from when I used to turn my n800 offline overnight.

Don't know how to do what you're asking, but why wouldn't you just turn off the wifi from the little wifi icon at the top of the screen?

well lock touch screen and device does not turn wifi off...it just prevents from accidental touches and if you have a password set, it will prompt the user to input a password before they can begin using the device

Sorry to say so, but I don't know how either. You'd still have to hit power to unlock it, anyway.

With powerlaunch, you could make it work, and even make an iPhonesque slider-unlock; but powerlaunch is quite... involved to configure.

if you do not mind, would you give me/us some pointers on how one might configure the powerlauncher. i understand that one still needs to hit the power button to restart the unit, but it is one less actual key press on the power botton

If you've got any specific ideas you want help implementing, let me know. Things to be aware of..
Your device will no longer lock on startup, with default config.
It is possible to edit it so that the screen cannot be unlocked; only play with the config while connected via ssh, so you can fix things.
