Is there any way to purchase a wireless internet plan and have it work for this, anywhere you go?

Something like how a cell phone is always connected to the internet.

I'd like to be able to use it as my cell phone by purchasing a phone number through Gizmo or Skype, but I don't want to miss any calls while driving!

Is there a way to sign up for an internet service via the phone number purchased from the VIOP service?

Has anyone done this? OTHER than by bluetooth connectivity from a phone? I want to eliminate that completely.

Just buy a data plan form your cell phone provider and always keep N8x0 tethered via Bluetooth.

It is not possible to do without BT connectivity. Your N8x0 (non-Wimax edition) basically has two radios: Bluetooth and WiFi. You have just specifically excluded BT tethering, and WiFi does not provide continuous coverage.

Hm... Is it possible to switch WiFi connections without killing active downloads? (Eg: Downloads pause, programs magically resume their connections later). I know there are access points all down the street I live on.

I imagine it could be done seamlessly with two WiFi adapters, at any rate...

Since your asking the golden question, why don't you create your own high power wifi network. All its takes is to get your ham radio license, and you can do homebrew wifi. I remember for this one ham radio event we had a wifi connection on a hill from our ham shack 4 miles away. You will realize you need to have a hand with electronics and soldering, also you will need to build a high power wifi interface for the internet tablet, connected with either bluetooth, wifi, or usb (using an ethernet like interface) so if you want somewhat reasonable internet close to home everywhere, thats a good idea. Keep also in mind security: you'll want to encrypt your traffic since it would be so widely accessable, it just takes a person like me to get free internet from that. Also, make sure you use a SSHtunnel or some other form of tunnel so if they do penetrate your access point's encryption, they won't be able to cause any more trouble.

Do some research my friend, there are many ways to get online, you thinking too inside the box.

For me, downloads initiated by Maemo Mapper over BT to cell phone, resume or continue when I arrive home and my N800 seamlessly connects to my WiFi router.

I would think that the same would occur from WiFi to WiFi connection provided the connections were previously saved and the tablet connectivity is set to "automatic".

This is a big sign for Nokia PR\marketing team to clarify their message and address such questions so that such basic necessity need not be asked in the future..

What would having a ham radio license have to do with wifi? Having a ham or amateur radio license allows you to talk (or cw) on specific frequencies allocated by the FCC. Wifi does not come under FCC rules and is (as far as know) open stardards. High power/home brew wifi on 2.4 Ghz can be made by anyone.
