ok people who have seen my prevouse posts know i have the n800 and have been trying to suss it out , most of which (with your help) i have done

i still have some questions

1)is there a uk alternative to gizmondo ( i looked it up and i can call usa for free ( or some usa numbers) but uk calls nope
skype seems to want me to pay to be able to call uk numbers and since i have now increased my t-mobile internet thingy-ma-gig(tech term) to unlimited 10gig( yeah i know someone should show a tmobile ceo a dictionary with unlimited highlighted! lol) i really want to make calls over the net not the mobile when out and about

2)in the communicator thing (the one that has google talk but no msn !!! now thats wierd) theres an option to add a sip account am i right in thinking i could apply to any voip service and use the sip settings in my n800 to make voip calls?

3) can you point me to a goofd noob friendly guide to compiling my own stuff from source

4) how do you start multiple xtermanals? i need one for civserver (i have to give it a port number) and then another to launch the client (and give it its port number)

5) you guys that have been using this device for a long time any tips?

6) when a new os comes out for it can i update with out wiping all my settings (im dual booted so can i update just the internal sd card one or will i need to update the built in flash then re-clone it all?)

7) everytime i do a cold restart i have to selct the mmc2 by holding down the menu key else it loads the flas version, is there a way to make it selec mmc2 by default?

8)i figured out how to make the clock apear on the home screen is there a way to make it digitial though? (minor thing i know but while im asking i may as well ask all

9) (not searched for this yet so if its covered dont worry will be searching when i have some time) when i streamed a divx file from my network using the filemanager and the tablets built in media player the sound was spot on but the video was very very very slow more like a slide show is this normal or have i got a faulty media player ( istream all the time to other devices around my flat with no problem too bad theres no n800 vlc lol)

thank you in advance for any replys (im having to type this quick as i have to vanish in a few minutes so please excuse the way there fired off and spelt and grammer etc etc) i will keep an eye on this on my tablet though

Skype would be free to certain people, if you get them to use skype, or if they are on 3 mobile phones (skype is free on 3 networks).

If you look on maemo.org under documentation there are quite a few good guides on compiling stuff and writing software, from different starting points.

As long as the VOIP service offers SIP access, it'll work fine. MSN is available if you install the Collabora telepathy extras or install the rtcomm beta.

Cross-compiling to maemo isn't really the most straightforward thing in the world, there's been some work on compiling on-device, but I really haven't paid any attention to it.

xterm menu: File -> New tab

Diablo will come with SSU, so future updates will not require a reflash and re-clone, but to get to Diablo, I highly suspect that's what you'll need to do.

Tap it to open Clock and tap the clock face in Clock to change.

diablo, i can live without that game if it means a reflash! (diablo2 on the otherhand may be worth it lol) but i was more thinking os2009 or os2008 version 4 which ever the next one will be, scary that some apps reflash though! but impressive that diablo could play on a little tablet

ok one further question ,is it safe to have the n800 on 24/7 like a mobile? turned on and keylocked in ur pocket as well? or will it overheat? (ok thats 3questions,but one subject)

thanx for replys so far i shall have a look for voip companys that other sip settings when im more awake

Uh, no . . . Diablo is the codename for the next OS2008 release and has absolutely nothing to do with the Blizzard games of the same title. :\ Go back and re-read what I wrote with that context.

Always-on is the manufacturer's recommended usage.

It is ok to have it turned on for any length of time. So far
I have not seen any issues. The main thing is to remember
to lock the screen or else you get a lot intresting things
going on.

Diablo is the codname for the OS.
It is not the game Diablo

But that would be a cool game to have on the machine.

Edit:

A little slow on the post....Darn

If they had you would find a lot of us wouln't be here. Windows isn't suitable for a handheld device like this. Well, I don't think it is that suitable for a desktop either, but there you go

Ahhhhhh ... please take our wish back !
Linux is the best thing that could've happened to this great little device-thingy.
If they would've put Windoof on, you would need to pay for anything extra - except maybe 'paint' and 'notepad' and it would crash every-so-often and you would think that is just the way it works.
Also with linux we have the great community here to fiddle with new problems and work things out and customize the heck out of it.

*sigh*
I am so glad its linux.
