I was trying to setup the mmc so that I could boot from it and followed this guide http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howt...from_mmc_card/

Somewhere along the way I think I may have tried typing a shutdown command in xterm before the formatting process had finished without realizing it. The tablet no longer recognises the mmc card at all despite several reboots. I am getting the error "no memory card inserted" in the file manager or control panel/memory section.

I would like to know if its possible to salvage this as it is a brand new 2gb kingston mmc and was working previous to my hacking efforts. I do not have a card reader, and I have tried to format it using an old nokia 6630 smart phone. The phone reports that the card is corrupt and will not format it.

i have searched this forum but have not found any hard and fast answers to address my problem...

2. [Optional] Formatting the card

A. In most instances this step is unnecessary; so, at least if you don't have a card reader or Windows, skip it and see if the process turns out OK anyway.
B. Download and install the Panasonic SD Memory Card Formatting Software into your Windows computer.
C. Place your SD Card in a card reader.
D. Use the Panasonic formatter to format the card. Select the options for FULL Erase ON and for Format Size Adjustment OFF. (It doesn't matter if the formatter reports that it can't use the Erase function.) This low-level formatting takes about 10 minutes.

Addon: What I discovered (and what would hopefully be useful for you), is that you can use your NIT as an SD (or if you have an n8x00 series) an SDHC reader. Just plug it into your computer, and then using the Panasonic formater, select the drive that is the SD card slot and then try formating it from there.

Thanks for the suggestions Laughing Man. Nothing works however. I think I may have ruined the mmc completely as even inserting it into a card reader does not recognise the card at all.

The Panasonic formatting app does not recognise the card reader when that card is inserted. Even Windows own built in formatting utility reports that there is no card inserted into the reader. I have also tried the reader in Linux (Kubuntu 7.10), and with that card inserted, the reader is not recognised at all... Damn it. I literally only used the card for less than an hour before it died...

I guess this should be a lesson for all who try this partitioning and reformatting of the mmc card. NEVER interrupt or try to type any command or restart the nit before it is completely finished. Since the formatting utility in the guide has no indication of the progress of the format aside from showing the current operation, you must wait until the normal prompt is returned...
