After coming across this site and reading about the various Nokia tablets, I broke down and bought a N800 from Amazon. I've got a few days before it shows up...but I thought I'd get started learning as much as I can so that I can get up to speed as quickly as possible when it does get here. I've seen some of the newbie videos which have been very useful, but I wanted to also check in on general tips for offline use.

The primary reason I got this is to read PDFs and listen to music or podcasts on the subway to work. Reading and composing email offline will also be useful. So in general are there good tips for using the N800 mostly offline?

I'm thinking things like
1) Toggle wifi radio on/off quickly to conserve battery
2) Set up exchange email so that it downloads and I don't have to use OWA.
3)etc...

Thanks for any advice. I'm very much looking forward to my N800.

1) You can press the power button on top of the unit and choose offline mode to disable wifi radio.

Evince is a brilliant PDF reader.

BTW: Enjoy your N800, I know I enjoy mine

In practice, there doesn't seem to be an advantage to powering off Wifi. The power-save capabilities of the CPU and Wifi chip are amazing. If you leave the device on all day (without actually taxing CPU or Wifi), the battery will still be full in the evening. Even checking mail every 10 minutes via IMAP over Wifi will barely make a dent. Now if you stream and play music via Wifi, the situation is different (maybe around 6 hours of constant streaming via Rhapsody).

What about if you are out of range of a wifi signal...does that matter like it does for cell phones?

I know with my cell phone if I don't turn it off and am out of range most of the day (like I am most days) I'll be completely drained by the end of the day...even though I didn't touch it all day. I've heard this is because the cell phone is continuously looking for the network when it isn't connected. Does the N800 work the same way for wifi networks?

Yes. There is an option to turn off automatic scanning for wifi networks. I can't tell you exactly how to get there as I'm at work, and we're not allowed to have PEDs (Personal Electronic Devices).

You can set up how often you want the Nokia to scan for wireless networks. I have it set for 10 minutes. It doesn't seem to make a dent, but then I don't remember the last time I've been without Wifi for a whole day... You can also turn scanning off (but then you manually have to connect)

Just to reiterate what some others have said here
I would say install evince as it is better and more user friendly than the built in PDF viewer.
1) You don't really have to worry too much about wifi searching usage. The power management is quite genius and I can leave my N810 on idle without turning the wifi off and it will last for a day or two no problem..
2) There is no exchange push mail support, however you can use imap, then for offline reading the best client is claws-mail. It operates pretty much like a desktop email client and is pretty powerful and has many features. Modest mail is another good mail client but that (to my knowledge) does not support offline caching of email messages.
3) To toggle offline mode which switches off the wifi and bluetooth radio its quite simple to depress the power button quickly and then you can go to offline mode.

Enjoy your new toy.
