I've got a N810 with English keyboard, but as being Finn I need some extra letters often, namely ä and ö. I've thought of two ways how to make it easier to type.

1. The Chr popup keyboard
For some reason ä doesn't appear on the keyboard screen that pops up after pressing the Chr key. Is it possible to change the letters that are appearing on this popup keyboard screen?

2. Chr-a
By holding Chr key and pressing a or o consecutively it seems possible to cycle through all "versions" of a and o letters with diacritics/accents.

Chr-a: àáæâäãå (ä is 5th)
Chr-o: òóœøôöõ (ö is 6th)

Is it possible to change the order of these diacritic letters? I would like to have ä and ö as the first ones when I hold Chr.

Are you aware that you can change keyboards. Go to Settings >> Control Panel >> Text Input Settings. and you can choose to have two keyboards handy

Yes, I noticed that, and tried it too. But in Scandinavian layout many of the other letters are in different places too. So, I found it not so useful. If I could get the keymat replaced then it would work of course.

What precisely does the chr key pop up? is it the same as one of the stylus-keyboard pages, or the finger-board page, or something else entirely?

The finger- and stylus-boards are fully customizable, for limited values of fully... Change any keys, and some layout changes.

Edit: By way of explanation, I have an N800; but much stuff is the same, so I hang in the N810 forum as well. Hence my ignorance of what pops up.

Benson, the Chr key pops up a small finger board of symbols and accents, but unfortunately it's very limited. There are in total 4x7 letters, two rows displayed at a time, and by scrolling down the other two rows are shown. It depends on hardware keyboard language setting what symbols are shown on this.

How can you customise the finger and stylus boards? Maybe this small symbol board could be customised too.

Hmmm... Not available from the N800 touch screen. So... you get to try what could be a wild goose chase. But Gerald pointed you correctly, if you're game.

Thanks for tips. I followed the instructions and converted the vkb files to xml. But it seems the vkb files contain mappings for the big virtual keyboard and the thumb keyboard, not the small Chr keyboard. Too bad.

Hmm, what next...
