First post.

I'm finally about to pick up a 770 at CompUSA. I was just wondering if there is an easy way for me to determine whether or not the retail box has been opened or not.

From the factory, is the retail box supposed to be wrapped in plastic, or sealed with official Nokia stickers, or anything?

Thanks.

I think the box is supposed to be sealed with transparent, circular stickers that say "Nokia".

Beware of CompUSA, they sold me a "repackaged" unit. The key clue was the previous owner's email, bookmarks, and MP3's.

That sucks. Thanks for the heads up.

Was the box sealed (If so, I wonder if CompUSA has their own "Nokia" stickers to re-seal returned products)?

Were you able to exchange it for a new one?

A friend of mine is currently in the US, and I asked them to swing by a local CompUSA to pick one up for me. Soon after I created this thread, my friend had already arrived at the store, and informed me that both 770's they had in stock were sealed as described above. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Look for cracks between the usb socket and the power jack?

If it's ever been exposed to open air, you will see cracks there...

[sigh....]

Yeah. I just looked through that thread. It's the first area on the 770 I plan to inspect. Wish me luck.

I was wondering the same thing when I picked up my 770 at CompUSA the other day. Was it new or a returned item? I still don't know but it seems to work as it should and there was no left over data from a previous owner <g>.

What made me a little suspicious is that the packaging is minimal compared to other gadgets I've purchased. There was no cellophane and only one round "Nokia" sticker sealing the box. The 770 was in a cloth pouch and appeared untouched (no visible fingerprints). There was no clear film over the screen like other PDAs and cell phones I've had. The only thing that was in a plastic bag inside the box was the battery.

Is this what the rest of you experienced?

Happy with my purchase but still wondering,

This is how they Should be from the factory. I work at CompUSA and thats how they come. As far as the transparent sticker witht he nokia logo goes... All the ones we have in stock now have ONLY one right in the center, but the first shipment had one or two on each box. And no, we do not have nokia stickers for re-sealing boxes. The only reason you should be recieving one that was returned is:
a) It was bought, not opened, and returned. In this case normal policy is to charge full price.
b) It was bought, opened, and returned. Normally sold on Clearence for like... ten bucks off or something.
c) Was bought, found to be defective, and returned. Should NOT be in stock and should have been sent back to nokia. Ask for the GM and ***** to him/her, not the sales guy.

So yeah... hope this helped. I am a salesman at compUSA (Only for another week, so dont be too hard on me) and we get yelled at by customers for this kinda stuff all the time. We try our hardest to grab the best looking boxes for people most of the time, but as bad as it sounds, if you are an ***hole to us the whole time, we really dont care if what you get works or not.... :-/ But if you are nice to us, we really do try to help out. Hell, the guy that bought one form me last week was so nice I did a firmware upgrade and installed a bunch of apps for him for free. Hope this helped...

Solace, thanks for the info. By the fact that you're here on these discussion boards, I would have to conclude that you're one of the rare good ones (electronic retail salesperson), if you know what I mean ;-)

The reason why I mentioned the "replacment" Nokia sticker thing, is because my Sony CLIE UX50 came with an official Sony sticker seal on its box. However, when I got home, I noticed that there were actually two stickers, one on top of the other. The bottom one was already ripped. My guess is that the store had their own stickers and was able to make it look unopened.
