Hey guys, I've had my n800 for about 4 days now and I've done a lot of experimenting with it. Right now I'm just running a FTP server on my desktop (Ubuntu) to access my home directory. I tried getting a Samba share up and running, but of course didn't think about the router's firewall. Should be no problem to fix now that I realize what to do...

I'm just wondering about the different media/document sharing solutions you guys have come up with. I would like to get Samba up and running (if I choose no password, it should show up in the Nokia's file manager, correct?), as it would be pretty nice for playing picture slideshows via the Nokia and/or my wife's laptop. Also that would probably be the most seamless way to access my docs.

I'm thinking for media browsing, maybe setting up a webserver and using some sort of CMS, like zenphoto. Something easy to navigate for when we want to find and show off pics quickly.

I haven't yet decided what to do for streaming video. Any suggestions? What do you guys use to access media/docs? The possibilities seem endless at this point!

How about running a UPNP server on your computer and streaming to mediastreamer or canola 2 on your tablet?

Interesting... I had actually never heard of that before. I'm looking into it now. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks!

No prob look over in the Canola UPNP thread, there's a discussion of what servers work really well and which don't (stay away from MythTV, it apparently isn't compatible)

For accessing music and pics outside of the firewall, there's also ssh and sshfs. You can mount network shares on your tablet from anywhere, and the data is encrypted (so no worries about spying while at the Internet cafe).

If you aren't familiar with ssh or how to set it up, then that solution isn't for you. If you are, then look into sshfs. I used the binaries here, but a search should find other options.

Video streaming may be better done with a mediaserver solution that transcodes on the server.

Perhaps mediautils is your video streaming cure. Thanks GA.

Ahh... yes, I have been using tablet-encode and it works like a charm. I had not yet tried mediaserv, but it sounds pretty cool.

I have very limited experience with SSH, but it's something I'm willing to delve into more once I get to the point of wanting access beyond the firewall. Right now my primary concern is creating something to be accessed from the living room, and easily enough by my wife. For that reason, I would prefer something nice and graphical with thumbnail support.

Thanks for the suggestions!

As a side note, I've just got mediatomb up and running. It "works", but seems to need some configuring to get it the way I want. Hopefully I can figure out how to get thumbs to display for pics, as well as a better way to organize things.

I have just re-installed the latest, greatest Mediastreamer, but for some reason my tablet doesn't find the media server.

Now, I had this working before (previous version of MS) but now, nothing. I am sure it is something simple on the server side, but seem to be stuck. Network Discovery and File Sharing are turned on and I am connected to the network, just no go. Any suggestions?

I just use Orb Networks. Pretty simple and able to convert my media on the fly so I don't have to do any transcoding (and trust me, for many of my other devices, I do a lot of transcoding).
